I am always bothered by the line "Lest we forget". Politicians should never forget the young americans who lost their life in service of our nation or because they were sent overseas by our leaders. I guarantee there has not be a Christmas that the family of those lost forgot.

I think our leaders should have to walk along the Vietnam "Wall" and then go to the archives and ask to see the boxes of items left at that somber memorial by family and friends. Only THEN should they commit the lives of our sons and daughters to an endeavor overseas.

I did not understand that statement "Lest We Forget" to apply to politicians only- but to all of us. I think we should require congress to go back to making formal declarations for war. That we should create legislation that prevents life terms in congress. That makes being a politician actual service to country, instead of making it a lucrative living.

The phrase "lest we forget" comes from a Rudyard Kipling poem called Recessional.

"Recessional" is a poem by Rudyard Kipling, which he composed on the occasion of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The poem, on the one hand, expresses pride in the British Empire, but, on the other, expresses an underlying sadness that the Empire might go the way of all previous empires. Kipling recognizes that boasting and jingoism, faults of which he was often accused, were inappropriate and vain in light of God's dominion over the world.

God of our fathers, known of old--
Lord of our far-flung battle line
Beneath whose awful hand we hold
Dominion over palm and pine--
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget - lest we forget!
The tumult and the shouting dies;
The captains and the kings depart:
Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice,
An humble and a contrite heart.
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget - lest we forget!
Far-called, our navies melt away;
On dune and headland sinks the fire:
Lo, all our pomp of yesterday
Is one with Nineveh and Tyre!
Judge of the Nations, spare us yet,
Lest we forget - lest we forget!
If, drunk with sight of power, we loose
Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe--
Such boasting as the Gentiles use
Or lesser breeds without the law--
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget - lest we forget!
For heathen heart that puts her trust
In reeking tube and iron shard--
All valiant dust that builds on dust,
And guarding, calls not Thee to guard--
For frantic boast and foolish word,
Thy mercy on Thy people, Lord!

Ahhhhh~ Kipling! ty :)

Of course, nearly 100 years later, we in the Puget Sound region are still avid bike enthusiasts. In Seattle, we even elected a tool named Bike McGinn as our mayor, after the previous tool, Greg Nichols, pissed us off too much.
