Warning of terrorism castigated by Republicans

You may recall the enormous controversy that erupted in April over a Department of Homeland Security report that assessed the threat of “right wing extremists.” The story provoked days of nonstop cable chatter, and DHS chief Janet Napolitano ultimately apologized.

Fast forward to the huge and horrible news yesterday that late-term abortion doctor George Tiller was shot dead by a man who reportedly posted on the blog of the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue. Maybe we should take another look at all that criticism?

One passage from the DHS report that provoked nonstop outrage said that right wing extremists “may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.”

Some on the right read this passage and decided it was a reference to them. Top conservative blogger Michelle Malkin warned that it meant you’re being targeted by Obama’s big brother government “if you are a member of an active conservative group that opposes abortion” or if you are active on other issues.

This wasn’t a fringe interpretation of the report, by the way. RNC chair Michael Steele for instance, blasted the report for labeling peaceful dissenters on issues “as terrorists.” Other Republican members of Congress sounded similar tones.

It’s true that the report committed a misstep in suggesting returning veterans are a risk. But the general intent of the report, which was chock full of warnings about “lone wolf extremists” capable of violence, now looks perfectly defensible, even reasonable.
Time To Revisit Criticism Of DHS Report On “Right Wing Extremists”?

Unfortunately returning vets are an added risk, due to mental stresses and such.
Not to pick on them at all, but it is a fact.

You all seem forget where the term "going postal" came from and why it would seem.

And you give the impression of being a card carrying member of the ACLU and you support this report? It's good to see even the ACLU members view the group from a partisan prism.

I supported the report from the moment it was released. It was just the honest truth, something the right is afraid of.

Edit: I should preface by saying I'm not trying to encourage the behavior but your response actually made me laugh out loud.

and of course you would support the report if it said your kind was a terrorist risk...right?
I'm pretty sure the report included domestic terrorists like ELF and the Earth Firsters. We just don't read about it because they didn't draw attention to it.

We do have to be realistic, dude who shot that doctor was certainly an extremist. Vigilantism isn't beneficial.

nanny stater leftists are always trying to demonize freedom lovers. That report showed it clearly.

Freedom??? Freedom to murder SHOULD be demonized...

You really are a total MORON...

AGAIN...your total blindness to what you accuse the left of...

Right wing "NANNY State"

you foolishly assume I was referring to the one single man that you intimated a whole report was written about. The killer of that abortion doctor does indeed belong in prison, death row preferably, but I was referring to the reports supposition that 'right wing' groups are extremists because they oppose leftist ideology.

Oh, you mean right wing groups that the DHS report warned about like the Freemen which Scott Roeder was a member of and Operation Rescue which tracked Dr. Tiller's moves, published his home address and what Church he attended and twittered that information to people like SCOTT PHILIP ROEDER...???

WHAT a fucking coincidence...
