We Should Have Free Government Psychological Counselling To Reduce Mass Shootings And

Diversity Makes Greatness
I just had an idea; so let me throw this out there to see what people think of it.

We have a huge and terrible problem with people going bonkers and then conducting mass shootings of innocent people.

Often times, these shooters are so crazy they don't even care if they live or die.

Many times they hate their own life so much that they do want to die, and they think it will be fun or maybe their one last chance to 'get even with the world,' if they can kill as many other people as possible on their last day on Earth.

Obviously, these are really messed up people.

Fortunately most really messed up people are not this violent or deranged.

But that doesn't mean we don't have a lot of really messed up people in this country.

And we pay a huge price for it. The mass shootings are the crux of it, but we pay in many other ways.

People are mean, chintzy, shallow, hateful, spiteful, selfish, uncaring, insulting and greedy. They will completely disregard the feelings and concerns of others. Just take a drive in any major city for a quick example of this. It won't be long before somebody is rude to you and threatens your life with a callous disregard for your very safety. Over nothing. A few seconds of time.

All of this hatred and selfishness hurts our society, holds us back, prevents us from doing so much, prevents us from achieving great goals.

Hatred is wrong. Our nation is full of hatred. There are a lot of really sad people out there!

Imagine if all those people, or even a goodly number of them, could learn to love life, love their neighbors, love doing whatever they can to contribute to our country instead of only taking whatever they can for themselves. Imagine how wonderful it would be to interface with friends, relatives and strangers, and everybody is upbeat, happy, and positive.

I can imagine that.

And you know what I see?

Creativity would go through the ROOF!

It would be OFF The CHAIN.

People helping one another, looking out for each other. Showing concern. It would be fabulous.

Suddenly, it seems rather obvious that we should at once begin a Massive Federal Government Program to offer free psychological counseling to anyone who desires it.

It would be totally in compliance with our Constitution.

It would "Insure Domestic Tranquility."

Naturally, the only logical source of funding to pay for this new government spending would be to tax the rich to pay for it. And ya know what? I bet the nation would be so much more prosperous that it would be worth it. The rich would probably end up just getting richer.

It would reduce or end mass shootings, and it would make the country happier and more prosperous; because happy people work better.

Hello Quetzalcoatl,

Why not?

Seems like a total win/win.

I would not be surprised if mental issues cause so much lack of productivity in this nation that the program would actually either pay for itself or even generate a net gain.

Been driving lately?

Drivers are SO courteous.

Our public highways are SO well known as places of remarkable courtesy and cooperation. /sarc

Capitalism isn't going to solve this.

Capitalism has no interest in doing this.

Government has to take it on.

For the good of the country.

So what, you're gonna mandate everyone go through therapy for a indeterminate amount of time? I'm not on board with that.

Hello QUOTE=Quetzalcoatl,

No, it would not be mandatory. Completely up to the individual. The only other instance might be if it is court-ordered.

It would be a public service available to anyone. There could be walk-up clinics. I bet a lot of people would like to have someone to talk to sometimes. The world is so impersonal. Especially with so much of our culture going virtual. Imagine all the mass shootings and suicides which could be prevented if only troubled people felt like they had someone impartial and understanding to talk to. Someone who would listen. Churches do that, but that comes with a guilt trip. People don't go. This would simply be about psychology. How to deal with life when things are troubling and overbearing. If we build it, they will come.

This seems like such a good idea to me, I can't understand why nobody thought of it before.

Airports, bus stations and train stations would be great places to locate. Rest areas. Online. Phone banks. Other various locations. Start off throwing maybe $1 billion at it. Do something in a region and monitor the results. I wouldn't be surprised if it actually pays for itself in fewer suicides, fewer mass shootings, a stronger economy, and a stronger GDP. A stronger GDP generates more revenue. If that increase exceeds the cost, it's a net gain, a win/win. I wonder if anybody has ever calculated the indirect cost, in GDP, of mental illness? Total sum of property damage, medical costs, PT, loss of productivity of the injured, police, SWAT, courts, prisons, lost potential productivity of those killed, psychological problems and loss of productive lives of the children whose parents were brutally murdered, potential scientific breakthroughs and ideas of all the excellent minds lost, etc. The figure must be staggering.

But even if it represented government spending to do it, it would be worth while if it saved lives. Not to mention all the heartbreak. We've got enough broken hearts out there. We need government policy that is aimed at a happy, contented populace. We want people to feel like they've got it made, living in the USA. The investment comes back to you. Here's why. Happiness and sadness are contagious. So, if you see somebody who is happy, that tends to cause you to feel happy. And if you see someone who is sad, that tends to make you sad, too. Empathy is a natural response. So if we make people happy, then it makes us happy too. Maybe money CAN buy happiness in this instance. Happy taxpayers, knowing they made troubled minds happy.
