Culture clash. The Southern slave owners saw themselves as "aristocrats" and the North didn't see it that way. I'm convinced the war started over something as stupid as the northern resorts in the Catskills not allowing Southern "aristocrats" to visit their properties any more. I don't know the real reason but it was probably something really petty and stupid.
