Last January the Washington Post organized a telephone survey to get an idea of what local people wanted for the Russian-controlled areas of Donbas (the so-called People's Republics). The poll was conducted by:
R-Research (based in UK); International Institute of Sociology (Ukraine); Levada Marketing Research (Russia).
In the Russian-controlled areas, 49% were in favor of joining the Russian Federation.
Some respondents may have suspected that "they" were listening in - how that might affect the response can only be conjectured. But how did pro-Russian sentiment go from 49% in January to 98% in September (Putin's referendum)? That's some margin of error!

P.S. In Donbas as a whole, 31% favored joining Russia. But that was last January.
