"In the referendum itself, the Remainers only ever made the case against Brexit and never had the courage to make the case for staying in the EU. Their reasons were clear: they knew that the one thing not on offer in 2016 was the status quo. Either we took control of our own future or we would be incorporated into a Europe that was determined to press on with ever-closer union.
Britain and the EU have a profoundly different approach to the world ... Unlike so many of our European friends, we have never felt the need to bury our 20th-century history in a pan-European project – a project where the integration of European nations is designed to sap them of their unique identity in order to minimise the risk they might pose to one another." - Dr Liam Fox MP, prominent Leaver.

Otoh:
“Oh my God! All those ignorant, uneducated people have ruined the future!” - dinner-party guest after the result came out, quoted in a letter to The Independent.
The letter-writer went on:
"I nearly voted Remain. Then, just before the referendum, I listened to the broadcasts, the sneering arrogance of Remainers, their ignorance of vast tracts of our country, their presumptions and judgements ... So I voted Leave."

One effect of the referendum debate has been to expose the ingrained contempt of some self-regarding elites for the people. Not all are Tories by a long way. Many think they are liberal, progressive, and a hell of a lot smarter than the rest of us. Like their European 'friends', they have done themselves no favors over the past three years.
At least the ever-closer EU saved us from WWIII (see 2nd para above).
Well, nobody can prove they didn't.
