What will be Joe Biden's "presidential legacy" - how will he be remembered by future generations of Americans ?

To give an example of what I'm taking about, let's take President Ronald Reagan's legacy. What are the things that he is still remembered for ?

There are quite a few different components that make up his legacy. For me, his greatest achievement was to win the Cold War against the Soviet Union.

Until Reagan was elected POTUS in 1981, America's policy toward the Soviet Union had been "containment", in other words stop the Soviets expanding and exporting communism further around the world any further than they already had, but put up with the existence of the Soviet Union itself.

Reagan's position was different, instead of the "containment" of Soviet expansionism, policy was to "roll back" Soviet communism wherever it had taken a foot-hold in the Third Wor This gave rise to the Reagan Doctrine. Under the Reagan Doctrine the United States would provide overt and covert aid to anti-communist guerrilas and resistance movements. Two examples of the Reagan Doctrine in action were Afghanistan and Nicaragua. The Soviet army invaded Afghanistan in 1979 and took control of large sections of the country A group of Islamists called the Mujahideen opposed the Soviet presence in Afghanistan . However they were not a match for the Russians in terms of military power. So Reagan supported the Mujahideen insurgency by providing them with CIA raining in irregular warfare techniques; crucial intelligence, and training in the high tech weapons.. One of these weapons was an American-designed surface to air missile system called the "Stinger" The "Stinger" was easy to use and could fired by one man. To give you an idea...if an aeroplane (for example a Soviet bomber or a helicopter gunship) was flying toward your position, intent on blowing you to smithereens, you could pick up a Zinger, hold it against your soulder (like you do when firing a rifle) point it at the Soviet aircraft, then pull the trigger. The Zinger would then release a missile that honed in on the enemy aircraft and hit it - causing the aircraft to fall from the sky and crash to the ground . This Zinger weapon was so effective and reliable that just in itself, it had a big impact in turing the tide of the war in Afghanistan against the Soviets.. With the help of the US, the Mujahideen defeated the Soviets who withdrew from the country in 1989.

One final example of the Reagan Doctrine in action was the war in Nicaragua. In 1979, a Marxist_Leninist group called the Sandinsta (who were heavily supported by the Soviet Union through Cuba staged a successful revolution against the the incumbent government which was a dictatorship that has been run by the Samoza family The term "dictatorship" immediately conjures up evil tyrants like Stalin or Pol Pot, under whose reign millions of civilians were tortured or murdered. The Samoza dictatorship was nothing like that, it was a relatively reasonable type of government. America and the Samoza regime in Nicaragua had a good relationship with each other.

There Sandinistas were opposed by a group of counter-revolutionaries called the "CONTRAS". In 1981, then- President Reagan authorised covert US support for the CONTRA. Reagan used the CIA to provide funding; training in guerrila warfare, military equipment and instruction on how to use it, and helped to create a transnational military force to to assist in the conflict.

The Marxist Sandinista government were ultimately defeated at the ballot box in the 1990 national election. The point is that although the US-backed CONTRAS did not defeat the Sandinistas militarily (i.e. on the battlefield) they nonetheless bought about a change in government.

I think Ronald Reagan is remembered (and rightly) so as the great Cold War Warrior who defeated the "Evil Empire" that was the Soviet Union. After all it was Reagan who - right from the outset - of his Presidency made it crystal- clear that America would not be tolerating any form of Soviet expansion into the Third World, and that he would be " rolling back" Soviet-backed, pro-communist governments in Africa, Asia and latin America. In the fight to "roll-back" communism around the world Reagan summed his attitude to Soviet communism as "WE WIN, THEY LOSE."

It was Ronald Reagan more than any other individual who gets the credit for bringing the Evil Empire crumbling down in November of 1987 when the hated Berlin Wall fell -- it meant that America had beaten the Soviet Union and won the Cold War. Everyone around the world partied big-time the day that wall came down.

So that (above) is an example of one of Ronald Reagan's element in Ronald Reagan's legacy as a POTUS.. His status as the greatest Cold War warrior will live on. it is something that he will always be remembered for. There other great achievements that are components of Ronal Reagan's legacy as a President of the United States, but I don't have the time to list them all, and if I tried no one would read this post because JPP members tend to ignore long postings.

THE LEGACY OF PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN

Joseph Robinette BIDEN was/is the worst President of America in the entire history of the republic.PERIOD
.

While he did not manage to achieve one single , substantive policy outcome (in any policy-domain), he did manage to preside over a series of diabolical cock-ups that were so extreme they seemed surreal. I mean, realising that your President has basically erased the Southern Border and allowed countless millions of unvetted, illegal immigrant to enter the US is a surreal experience - that is , it's real, but surely it can't be real - it that big an act of moronic, of lunacy, that it screws with your mind.

Biden was/is also a pathological liar, a corrupt politician, an American President who treated the American people with disdain and utter contempt. From the day he entered Congress in 1972 (as Senator for Delaware) Biden was a grifter and a "Machine Politician" who did not give a F**K about anything besides enriching himself and gaining political power - by any means necessary.

But do you know what sums up Joe Biden best of all? I think it's this... in Jan of 2021, President Biden stopped all work on the construction of Donald Trumps Border, that Trump began as POTUS45 in 2016. As a result of Biden stopping all work on the construction of the wall, somewhere around $100,000,000 (USD) of steel bars and, bollards, cement and other materials used in constructing the wall were simply left to rust .

Then with only about four weeks remaining in his term as President, the Biden administration was caught secretly hauling away these unused Border Wall materials in trucks to a location where they were to be auctioned off ot rock-bottom prices (e.g. 5 cents in the dollar) through GovPlanet, an on-line federal equipment market place..

Why did Biden authorise this "fire sale" of unused border wall materials ?

The reason is that (1) Biden knew it was a mistake to stop the construction of Trump's border wall in 2021 Secondly, Biden knew that Trump would resume building the Border Wall in 2025, and selling off the materials he would have used was a way of sabotaging the resumption of work on building the wall in 2025. What I think was also a key factor in Biden's decision to sell off the unused Border wall materials is the fact that ever since 2016, when Trump promised to build the border wall, it has stood as a symbol of Trump himself. I mean, in a very real way, the Southern Border Wall has become emblematic of Trump the man/the leader.. Biden knew that selling off the unused components of Trump's Border Wall would really piss him off, and it did.

Trump pointed out that the unused Border Wall materials Biden had been selling off for pennies on the dollar were expensive in 2016 and now 6 - year later the cost of replacing them would be almost double, when construction of the Border Wall resumed in early 2025. The American tax-payer would be the loser in Biden's parting jab at Trump.

The fact that Biden knew Trump would be resuming construction of the Border Wall early in 2025, and with only about 4 weeks remaining in his term as President decided to sabotage the reconstruction effort, says it all about Biden.

What Biden is - more than a pathological liar and a corrupt politician - is a very nasty , bitter and twisted little bitch.. Biden knows that his Presidency was a disaster for America/Americans in every way, he also knows that Donald Trump was a class act as a political leader and that he was a diabolical failure. All of this , seethed and festered away in what was left of Biden's mind. (And) rather that serve out his final weeks as President quiety, he simply could not prevent himself from taking a parting bitch-slap at Trump, by doing something as petty, spiteful and vindictive as auction of the materials Trump would soon be using to continue building the Southern Border Wall.

Biden is pretty much like a teenage "mean girl" He hated Trump and tried to bring down in a variety of vicious, underhanded ways, (like lawfare, for ex). But Trump was too strong and too tough - and far too righteous - for Biden and all of the other Democrat "Mean girls".

His legacy will be a steaming pile of shit.

Methinks you're giving biden way too much credit for his legacy accomplishments as stated in
the OP, remember, he accomplished all of these great things while being mentally handicapped
during his entire term. One has to take his mentally challenged state of mind into consideration
while honoring his legacy. Can't wait to see if he gets a presidential library honoring the man and
his many accomplishments.

Biden "knows" almost nothing about 75% of the day, and that's on the "good days". Biden likely still wakes up in terror because he doesn't know where he is. Like the movie "50 First Dates" they probably have a video telling him why he doesn't recognize his surroundings and that Jill will be in soon to help him get dressed.

On the "bad days" they keep him from seeing staff and use a signature machine to sign stuff in his behalf. Are you certain all those pardons are really from Dementia Joe? Do you really think he carefully considered each one of these pardons or do you, like most folks, believe that his interim brain (wife and son), who are helping him keep the appearance of "functional", are making decisions for him and asking his "staff" to find justifications for their "decisions" they made after the fact?

Biden was not mentally fit for office, long before the Democrat Machine chose him to be their Presidential nominee for the 2020 election. The Democrats knew this perfectly well. During the 2020 electoral campaign period, they had to Keep Biden hidden away from the media in a "basement" Because on the few occasions he was let out of his "basement" he blurted our some gigantic gaffes, and simply did look like he was nowhere near being 100% "compos mentis." Biden was only able to pass muster if his contact with the media/Press corps was kept to a bare minimum. Which it was.

If we presume the 2020 election was fair and square (which seems highly doubtful) then then Biden won the race and was inaugurated as POTUS46 on the 20th Jan, 2021.

So here you have the unusual circumstance of a sitting American President who is "non compos mentis" due to being afflicted with dementia and is unfit to carry out the duties and responsibilities of President and Commander-in-Chief..

What SHOULD have happened in an ideal, non-corrupted , Biden administration , is that the Vice President would have triggered the 25th Amendment protocols and Biden would then have the option of either resigning his office (like Nixon did, "voluntarily") or be forced to stand down as President according to the 25th Amendment. The but the reality is that the Democrat Party were rotten to the core, and Vice President, Kamala Harris Kamala and Biden's cabinet covered for Biden by lying about his mental decline, as did the Mainstream Media and even Biden's personal physician.

It's difficult to know just how severe Biden's dementia was during the period up the Presidential debate with Trump, where his true extent of his cognitive decline was exposed to the world. AS you know Biden was forced to announce he would not be running for President in 2024 in a coup orchestrated by Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi that held a gun to his head and gave him no option.

I think just about every American political pundit or political historian knows full well that Joe Biden was a ceremonial, puppet President who was afflicted with dementia and ought not have allowed to be the official President of the United States. Given that Biden WAS President de jure and not President de facto (I think Obama was probably the actual President), then his legacy will be a stinking crock of shit. I cannot identify one substantive worthwhile, positive achievement that Biden can take credit for as POTUS46 - NOT ONE !

I suggest he'll be remembered much like Jimmy Carter, except he'll have no post presidency activities that redeem him to a degree. That is, he'll go down in history as a mediocre president that caused considerable social strife within the US, failed on the economy, foreign policy, and left the world and US in a weaker place. I suspect one of his worst attributes will be using the DOJ as a tool against his political rivals with 'lawfare.' While much of that can be attributed to Democrats in general, Biden as president stood by and let it happen. That was a huge mistake, but then again, Biden has a half-century of making huge mistakes politically.

Then there's his senility. Like Wilson in his last year of his presidency, Biden will be remembered for remaining in office even as he was clearly incapable of performing the duties thereof, and that a cover up of his inability was done by his inner circle and wife.

On the whole, he's not likely to fare well in history.

His senility the entire time he was in office is what leaps out.

Academic historians have already compared him favorably to George Washington and FDR. They may rank him in the top five. Maybe the greatest ever.

While much of that can be attributed to Democrats in general, Biden as president stood by and let it happen.
He had no choice. He was punched out the entire four years.

I'm given to believe with increasing certainty that academic historians are for the most part morons.
He had no choice. He was punched out the entire four years.

And, in any reasonable, objective, measured history of his presidency, Biden will be seen as a bumbling, mediocre president.

Wow, you give him a LOT of credit.

He (his handlers?) arguably gave rise to not only the resurgence of MAGA , but solidified it, maybe for years to come.
Not necessarily a bad thing but bad for Dems.
Think about it… Dems didn’t fully recover from Carter until 2008, and that was mainly because of eight years of Bush jr

Same thing here. The Left overplayed their hand and got it chopped off for the effort.

It amazes me that the Democrats had to gall to allow him to run in the primary.

Bidens enduring legacy will be that he was to weak to prosecute Trump to the fullest extent of the law for committing treason.
... because Trump never committed any treason for Biden to have prosecuted. Of course Biden, and the DNC at large, considers making America great again to be treasonous.
