"With help from The Rhythmic Noise Philharmonic Orchestra & Mind Choir, Cheap Trick will be bringing their classic 1979 album Dream Police back to the stage. More than 30 years after its initial release, the platinum album that shot the band to rock stardom in the late 70’s will now have a different feel to it. Tom Petersson, the bass player of Cheap Trick says, “Dream Police was the first record where we felt the songs were well-suited for orchestration; that was a very expansive time for us musically.”
Cheap Trick consists of four members: Robin Zander, Tom Petersson, Rick Nielsen and Bun E. Carlos. Dream Police was the fourth official release from the band. Riding the huge success from their live effort Live at Budokan, the band went into the studio in late 1978 and early 1979 to record Dream Police. The album was an immediate hit for the band, and it sprung two very popular singles. These popular singles were the title track and “Voices”. It was the first Cheap Trick album that had orchestra elements. The band received a lot of attention from KISS throughout the 70’s, which gained them a little more popularity. Dream Police eventually became certified platinum, and is still regarded as the group’s finest effort. The band maintained a level of popularity through the 80s, but they never regained the popularity they had throughout the 70s.
It was announced in December that the band was going to bring back Dream Police in its entirety, along with some of their other hits, and put it together with an orchestra. It’s not the first time a rock band has brought a live orchestra on stage with them. Bands like Metallica and KISS have tried it before, but only for one show. Cheap Trick will do a twelve show tour with the orchestra. Zander told Billboard,
“It will be like a three-part show, Dream Police being the core part. There’s going to be some film, some interviews, some of our other music that’s going to be performed by other people — I can’t really say special guests, but guests — some medleys done (by) just the orchestra,”
He also went on to say that “There will be some different renditions of songs; ‘The Flame’ will have a different approach to it. We’ve discussed putting together our own sort of ending that’s kind of bits and pieces of songs that are familiar with the audience.”
The series of shows – at Milwaukee’s Northern Lights Theater at Potawatomi Bingo Casino – kicks off January 20th, 2011, ending on February 26th."
