When the Hell did THIS happen?

Depends on the state Dixie. Here in NM they stopped a woman who had 250k in her car, it was seized on the same premise and our appelate court said no no nanette. Said large amounts of cash are NOT prima facia evidence of drug trafficing and gave it all back. So it depends on what sort of rights abusing state you live in.

No, actually that is why it was such a shocker to me I guess... I can't imagine ever having $300k in cash on me, for any reason. I think it's kind of a dumb point to try and make, that this is solely a problem faced by the poor. lol

I understand suspicion of drug activity, and if you want to have undercover surveillance put on someone who is found to have that kind of loot, I am okay with that, I understand there is a "suspicion" factor here, but to just take someone's money despite the lack of criminal charges, seems to be a direct violation of the Constitution. What happened to 'innocent until proven guilty?' What happened to 'due process?' Habeas Corpus?
Dixie, this may be the last time you hear this from me. I agree.

STY's point is still valid. What where her legal costs to fight this up through the appealate courts? Pretty considerable would be my guess and I doubt she would be compensated by the state for that expense either. There should have been some punitive measures taken against the police for this act as punitive measure to prevent it's occurring again.

Maybe it's a state thing. Texas police in the eastern counties budget heaviley on fortitude ability. And it is almost exclusively detrimental to poor people.

I don't know about your money but mine says "This note is LEGAL tender for all debts public and private." The fact that it is LEGAL TENDER means it is legal for me to have, to keep and to use. In the USA I don't have to prove that I didn't commit an illegal act, the state has to prove that I did! I know that those you that hate dopers also hate the presumption of innocense and the warrant requirement, but that is the country we live in. Having that much cash should be primae facia evidence that you are pretty well off and really stupid for carrying around with you. But I will remind you that Howard Hughs was known for this kind of behavior as well.

There is still a federal investigation going on into this behavior in East Texas. Cops heads need to roll.
