While this question has no answer, the nation has had problems since it turned away from supporting the working people and moved to supporting the wealthy and the corporations which started with Reagan, and sadly was continued by Clinton, and brought to the brink of destruction under Bush Jr. The turn right as detailed by Dean Baker has negatively affected all aspects of American society, including science and medicine. Thankfully Obama won and I hope he can at least move us back on track as a nation of people and not corporate power.
