Where Americans Stand On Abortion, In 5 Charts

There is one point, though, in this debate that is clear: The majority of Americans don’t want to overturn Roe. How polls ask about support varies, but the vast majority of respondents — somewhere between 85 and 90 percent, according to most polls — think abortion should be legal in at least some circumstances.

Is the Supreme Court supposed to make the decision based on public opinion?

If 85-90% of the public wants abortion to remain legal they should be able to pressure their state legislatures to pass laws keeping it legal (or pass no laws at all on the subject).

You're not wrong.

The abortion debate is interesting in the sense there is a lot of nuance in terms of people's positions. You'll notice if Congress ever attempts to address abortion, whether Republicans or Democrats, it's never legislation actually intended to pass it's simply to rile up the base. Republicans trying to propose hugely restrictive legislation or Democrats trying to pass allowing abortion up to birth.

I think the Democrats have a vote scheduled next week for the Senate although they know they don't have the 60 votes needed. It already passed the House.

no, they should make it on precedence and the fact the supreme court has already given women the right to make this decision for themselves.

If this decision becomes final, all it does is return the issue to the states. It doesn't "ban" abortion. It doesn't make it illegal. It makes it a state issue. That's it.

Seems like most Americans feel that abortion should be illegal in at least some circumstances as well.

As with almost all considerations, our media reduces this consideration to a binary choice and that is not how most people think about most things.

Even within the multitude of points debated on this topic, there are many, many shades of grey that influence the perceived desirability of the practice.

This issue involves law, morality, science, definition of life, religion and just about anything else that people can disagree about.

What the SCOTUS did in 1973 was a mistake against Constitutional Law. What the SCOTUS seems poised to do in 2022 is undo that mistake.

Pew Research polling suggests that this issue is filled with nuances and questions.
