I'm not sure if Lenin would have been as ruthless as Stalin later turned out to be. If he had kept the NEP, they could've avoided starving millions of Ukrainians. Stalin did industrialize the USSR, but he did so at an insane cost. In the early 30's, you could be fired from your job after missing one day of work, after which you'd lose all food credits and the right to an apartment. In the late 30's, there was mandatory imprisonment for 4 months for quitting your job, and if you were 20 minutes late to work there was 6 months of probation and confiscation of 25% of your wages. Managers could be charged with treason and sentenced to death for failing to meet harsh quotas that required people to work 16-18 hours a day. 600k people were sentenced to death during Stalin's industrialization program. He also all but abandoned Lenin's socialist ideals, banning abortion, promoting religion, and essentially turning the Soviet's into a nationalist-fascist country.
