how is it that this decrepid old man ends up in the center of every controversy or fight....
LOS ANGELES - The Democrats' family fight took an ugly personal turn Saturday, as Barack Obama charged Hillary Rodham Clinton with "swift-boating" after a conservative columnist accused her of hoarding scandalous information about the Illinois senator's personal life.
Robert Novak, whose White House contacts put him at the center of the Valerie Plame investigation, reported Saturday that unspecified "agents" working for Clinton "are spreading the word in Democratic circles that she has scandalous information."
"In the interest of our party, and her own reputation, Senator Clinton should either make public any and all information referred to in the item, or concede the truth: that there is none," wrote Obama.
Novak made no reference to a source, anonymous or otherwise, gave no indication what information he was referring to and didn't seek comment from Clinton, whose staff later dismissed his account as baseless.
"She of all people, having complained so often about 'the politics of personal destruction,' should move quickly to either stand by or renounce these tactics," Obama said of Clinton. "The cause of change in this country will not be deterred or sidetracked by the old 'Swift Boat' politics." The term refers to GOP attempts in 2004 to portray Democratic nominee John Kerry's service in Vietnam as less than heroic.
Clinton spokesman Jay Carson said he has "absolutely no idea" what Novak or Obama were talking about. He ridiculed Obama for allowing Novak to drive a wedge between Democrats.
"He's parroting Republican talking points from a columnist of questionable credibility," Carson said. "If you don't have the experience not to fall into a Bob Novak trap you have no business seeking the presidency."
