The results of a survey taken at the Covington Open Mike night held July 2 at the Covington Trailhead were released last week.
The survey, which was passed out to all that attended the forum, was only answered by half of the participants at the forum.
Organizer Jeff Crouere said about 194 forms were returned that evening, although 400 had been printed and distributed. The survey consisted of five yes or no questions and one open answer opinion question. The questions and their responses are as follows:
For the question do you believe that the government should control or nationalize the healthcare industry, four answered yes and 190 said no.
The numbers were just the same with four voting yes and 189 to the question, do you believe that the federal government should bailout private industries such as GM, Chrysler, banks and insurance companies?
Most everyone at the forum agreed that the free market was the best way to solve the current economic crisis with 172 voting yes and 18 voting no to the question, do you believe that the free market system in place since America’s founding is the best place to solve the problems of the private sector?
There was a general consensus that the proposed “cap and trade” environmental legislation now in Congress is just another tax. Only six people said the bill would solve environmental problems, while 179 people thought the bill would just raise taxes.
There was also overwhelming support for the question, do you want the federal government to return to its original scope of limited power as so explicitly instructed by the United States Constitution with 184 voting yes and only seven people voting no.
The answers to the open answer opinion questions were a mixed bag. The question asked respondents to say in a few words what their greatest concern is right now.
For this question, Crouere said he grouped answers under categories.
The number one response was socialism/ Marxism with 26 votes; then came big government with 21 votes; President Obama, 20; loss of freedom, 13; national health care, 12; taxes 11; out of control spending, 10; loss of religious rights, 7; getting away from the Constitution, 6; and too much debt, 5.
Crouere said the remaining answers were scattered along a number of subjects with only one or two responses each.
The original tea party was held April 15 and this second forum was a politically themed Open Mike Night held at the Trailhead. A number of speakers focused on the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and patriotism.
Future Open Mike nights will have other themed events, such as poetry, culture and music. Dates have not been established for future forums, but city officials have said they expect to hold the evenings quarterly. Over 400 people attended the event, according to Crouere and city officials.
