Why is there a requirement that presidential candidates release tax returns?

It is not a constitutional requirement. During the vetting process, I am sure someone in the government has made sure candidates have not committed tax crimes.

Senators, nor congressman are pressured to show tax returns. Not sure what the big deal is, it is private information and doesn't reveal much at all about a candidate.
 
I personally would like to know if the presidential candidate is paying taxes, how much or nothing at all?!!

It actually does reveal quite a bit, in Trump's case whether he is a hypocrite about doing business in America.

That information cannot be found out any other way? Have you ever given your tax returns in order to get a job?

I really don't see the value of knowing his tax returns, other than how much he makes, how much he donated, etc., which really how small issues as to whether he can be CIC. He has so many other flaws, like, um, lying frequently, building a wall and so on. To need tax returns to determine whether a politician is a hypocrite is kind of funny don't you think? I don't know of a single politician who is or has not been a hypocrite.

It's been traditional since Nixon. Agnew was guilty of tax evasion. Pulitzer Prize winning tax reporter David Cay Johnston has written a lot about this issue and why releasing the returns became the norm, maybe people who want to cry about the poor persecuted Orange Julious should try reading him and learn something.

I thought the Donald was all about releasing a birth certificate. Seems like tax returns are not fair game.

Ha ha, now that is a good one. Derp Donald told us he had proof Obama's birth certificate was a fake and he never produced it.

Tax returns are not a constitutional requirement, but your birth is a constitutional requirement.
