Why isn't white supremacy considered a form of totalitarianism?

Why aren't the single party white supremacists dictatorships that existed in the south, from roughly the founding to around 1970, considered to be totalitarian regimes on the order of Nazism? And since these states controlled a third or more of US electoral votes, why isn't the US considered to be a totalitarian government in essence for most of its history due to the numerous compromises it had to make to the totalitarian white supremacist dictatorships in its midst?
