My God...even when it's obvious to everyone you just cannot admit you made a mistake.
It's possible he could have been making a joke knowing that everybody would understand that nobody could mistake a squirrel for a raccoon.

it amazes me how some people's hate causes them such consternation. i lived in the NW for 10 years and every time we camped we had racoons visit. and we had squirrels like everywhere.....of course i know the difference
