Why Should They Get Help

Two Republican Congressmen who voted against Hurricane Sandy aid are now demanding federal aid for Waco following the fertilizer plant explosion.

Couple of questions.

Why? Was this a natural disaster or the result of stupidity? And why should they get the aid they didn't want other states to get?

A pair of Republican lawmakers who voted against federal aid in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy are now looking for federal aid in the wake of the deadly explosion in West, Texas.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz lambasted the Sandy Aid package, voting against the measure in January. Cruz issued a statement explaining that he voted against the aid because it included a number of spending measures that were not related to disaster relief, including "Smithsonian repairs, upgrades to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration airplanes, and more funding for Head Start."

However, in Washington Thursday, Cruz said that he was "working to ensure that all available resources are marshaled to deal with the horrific loss of life and suffering that we've seen" after an explosion at a fertilizer plant in Texas leveled the plant and nearby houses and business, claiming the lives of at least a dozen people and injuring hundreds more.

Right, because refusing aid to the people of that small town will sure show those senators who is boss, huh?

And we have to remember what is really important. Its not helping our people in times of disastor, but showing wayward senators that they were wrong and that their constituents are going to pay for it.

Look, point out the hypocrisy all day long. But the idea of refusing federal aid to people because of a couple of jackass politicians is the worst sort of partisan politics and childish nonsense.

You still having problems grasping that sarcasm thing, huh, WB?

Yeah, we should give the people of Waco the shaft to get back at their Congressmen. That makes a lot of sense.

Remember back during Katrina, a certain General ripped the media a new one? I believe he answered they were "stuck on stupid" and that's where Liberals always are ;)

I hope those same congressmen learned a lesson though...and their constituents.

That disasters can happen anywhere and when people are suffering due to one, we need to help. And Waco is nothing compared to the devastation that the NE coastline took with Sandy.

When I was helping my brother dig out the few salvagable belongs we could from his house after the tornado hit Tuscaloosa in April of 2011, I talked about how devastating the tornado was, as compared to other tornados.

My brother said "It depends on whether you were hit or not. If a smaller storm destroyed one single home, to that homeowner it was the worst storm ever".

This idea that we compare disastors is something we should avoid.

And I was one of the power workers who worked the Hurricane Sandy restoration.

Man...I remember that tornado. My wife and I were in Western NC for a Music Festival. That one was shortly followed by the one in Joplin. My brother lives right across the border in Galena KS and works in Joplin. They saw the Joplin tornado form from their house.

But, don't get me wrong I wasn't making light of what happened in Waco

The best part of these disastors is the outpouring of support and assistance. The worst part is that the attention span of our media and our people is so short. Tuscaloosa is still not back right. Joplin is still a mess in places. And the damages done by Hurrican Sandy will be around a long time.

I was in NO a year or two ago and the 9th ward is still a mess from Katrina. Part of the problem down there was that a lot of the homes down there were built, bought and paid for in the 60's and 70's, when blue collar work was plentiful and good paying. Well those folk died off and left those homes to their kids, who weren't nearly as fortunate. They couldn't afford Homeowner's insurance and certainly can't afford to fix them up...so they simply abandoned them.

My sister lived in Alexandria, LA and she was telling me about it. She volunteered(she's an RN) right after it hit at one of the airports that was set up as an emergency medical shelter. Sad stuff.

Apparently his stance is that he was being sarcastic and didn't really mean they shouldn't get aid.

No, my point is that we should never question the need for aid following a disaster. For some reason it's always congressmen on the right who question such aid, unless it's needed in their district.

A few years ago providing aid to disaster areas was a no-brainer. The fact that anyone codifies aid today is deplorable.

Well that does make sense.

I guess if you want to fund an unpopular project, put it in a bill written to save babies, bake apple pies and encouraging kids to brush their teeth. That way anyone who votes against it hates babies, hates apple pie and is in favor f tooth decay.

Every single funding bill passed by Congress has small amounts of pork, usually in an attempt to buy a vote. Is it wrong? Yes. Will it ever change? No. It's the nature of the beast.

As far as Hurricane Sandy relief being "unpopular", I doubt it.

I don't believe I stated that the hurricane relief was unpopular.
