The Trump cult loves to claim that they are 'patriots' committed to Making America Great Again. The problem is, the America they profess to support does not exist outside of the echo chamber created by Trump, Fox News, OAN, and Newsmax. Their dystopian view of America has every major city being burned to the ground by the evil BLM and Antifa. It paints rural America as Mayberry, North Carolina, where Aunt Bee puts dinner on the table every night, and Floyd the Barber will give you a haircut and catch you up on the local news. They think that America is a place where toting assault rifles to intimidate political opponents is just an exercise of their 2nd Amendment rights. They think America is under attack by some radical socialist agenda. They believe that the bill of rights was written for white Christian men. And they believe that those who disagree with their view of America are traitors that should be executed, no trial needed. Maybe this is a result of ignorance, or hatred or racism, or some other mental defect. Most likely it's a combination of all of those things. But it is not reality. The reality is that most cities have become great experiments in diversification that uphold the long tradition of welcoming immigrants. The reality is that crime and poverty and drug use in rural America is part of everyday life there. The reality is that most Americans don't believe their viewpoints, and they have spoken loudly in the last two elections to repudiate that ugly view.
Whatever the reason for this viewpoint, it is ignorant, it is hateful, and it is dangerous. No amount of dialogue, no attempt at reason, no appeal to our better angels will change them. They hate the very values that have made America great in the past, and they will never let loose of their hatred. Time to accept that they simply need to be marginalized. Shouted down when they attempt to spread their hate in the public square. Disarmed when they attempt to intimidate or incite violence. Voted out of office if they are serving. It's time to shed the stink of these unAmerican vermin. There is no room in this country for their viewpoints. We need to shut them down. Period.
