Wikileaks must stop "dangerous" leaks: military

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks is endangering the lives of U.S. forces and people who support the United States around the world, the top U.S. military officer said, ahead of the expected release of more classified U.S. documents.

2. if it does cause the death of just one american, is that then cause

3. combine the two questions above, you don't believe in killing them, what then is your recouse

Do you think that Wikileaks was founded simply to attack america?

wikileaks is an excellent idea. more people should be just like him. if gov is going to deny it's transparency, it's up to the patriots to do it.

Yurt, I'm gonna disagree here. While the age old axiom 'loose lips sink ships' holds true today, the loose lips are those of our own military. OPSEC is still key and when our soldiers forget that, the fault lies solely with them, not with someone who reports what they originally put out there.

what about the first amendment

if the information leaked is actually as sensitive as mullen claims, why was it not more carefully guarded - or is the information just embarrassing

I pick embarrassing.

Maybe the "top U.S. military officer" is afraid of another McChrystal affair.

so if someone dies because of this leak, thats ok with you?

Yeah, no. The information being linked most certainly can be dangerous to various military units.

For as long as I've followed politics non-specific warnings like this have been around. I wouldn't expect Mullen to state exactly what the danger is but surely he can be less vague. "...the lives of US forces and people who support the United States around the world..." covers a lot of ground.

No, but Wikileaks isn't to blame. They don't go and tap government phone lines or coerce people into leaking information. All they do is report something someone else is already leaking out.

i would posit that they would be the proximate cause of the death, in that, but for their release of the documents, the person would not have died

Which raises the question of whether it is protected by the First Amendment at all; it may equate to shouting "Fire!" in a crowded theater.

if the documents are protected by laws that prohibit the release of said information, the first amendment might not protect wiki leaks from publishing the documents....they can be protected, even if they know the documents are not to be released under certain and specific situations

also, they are not based in the US, so the first amendment would not apply in this case....unless we extradited them here and tried them here

Dude, you're not getting it here. IF they obtain said documents/communications/whatever, they are already released, for whatever reason. Thus it is the person releasing them, not who they are released to, that is at fault.

sorry bud....but that is not the way it works...

if person X gives person Y documents that are illegal to publish, and person Y publishes those documents....then guess what...person Y is as responsible if not more so that person X....

you're focusing on released, when the keyword is "publish"....i can release a bazzillion top secret or slanderous documents to you, but...if you <-- publish them, then you are the person liable for that publication

Yeah bro, but the key of OPSEC, lies with the military itself. When we're deployed we have to burn all the envelopes letters come in because we are not sure where they may end up if we don't. That's OPSEC. So if someone releases documents or information, it's the releasers fault, not the publisher. It shouldn't have been released in the first place.

capt.....

if i give you a thousand tons of coke....and you burn it, bury it, whatever....or....you sell it or give it away to kids

who is the person most culpable for the harm to the kids?

i have no idea why they were founded, however, they have gone after america

You really need to try to get your empty head around the idea that america is not the raison d'etre for this planet. Indeed, in the general scheme of things you are not very important at all, although it must be said that you fuck up more often and more royally than your size might suggest.
Here is an extract (a very small one) from the WikiLeaks website that might help you understand. You will note that the US does stand guilty of many crimes against humanity (Yes, yes, yes, I know there might be worse), but they are not alone.
