It's possible that one or more of the fires have been caused by arson or even just carelessness. The area is, as reported, tinder dry at this time of year (hence the term "tinder", I suppose). The wind sucks out even more moisture -- something similar is happening here at the moment as well, though happily we haven't any fires. Conditions are ripe for fires to spread and the tiniest spark or even sustained sunlight on, say, a discarded glass bottle, could start a small flame if there's anything adjacent to it that could catch and burn (dry grass, leaves, paper).
With the winds raging at up to 70 mph across the region, there's little that the firefighters can do to stop the advance of the flames. Now that some of the smaller fires seem to be starting to coalesce into major fronts this has become nothing short of horrifying.

There are too many unpredictable variables for any real success of such an attack to be even relatively assured, though. The dryness seems to be seasonal; that could be considered a reliable factor, but the winds could be there or not (in fact I understand that they're early) and constant, or gusty, or feeble, or gone. It's too intuitively appealing given our present state of relative paranoia to give a conspiracy hypothesis more than passing credibility, I think.

Who are? Where? If you're being serious, is this intended to act as a back-fire or what? From what I read they wouldn't try anything like that because they can't control the direction of the flames due to the wind.

FBI: al-Qaeda detainee spoke of fire plot
PHOENIX (AP) — The FBI alerted law enforcement agencies last month that an al-Qaeda terrorist now in detention had talked of masterminding a plot to set a series of devastating forest fires around the western United States.
Rose Davis, a spokeswoman for the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, told The Associated Press that officials there took note of the warning but didn't see a need to act further on it.
The contents of the June 25 memo from the FBI's Denver office were reported Friday by The Arizona Republic. Davis declined to share a copy of the memo and an FBI spokeswoman in Denver didn't immediately return a telephone call.
The Republic reported that the detainee, who was not identified, said the plan involved three or four people setting wildfires using timed devices in Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming that would detonate in forests and grasslands after the operatives had left the country.
The memo noted that investigators couldn't determine whether the detainee was telling the truth.
The newspaper said many forest law enforcement officers it contacted had no idea the warning had been issued.

I find it more likely that one or more Americans may be behind this.
Nothing motivates Americans like fear.
Now fear that "terrorists" are starting fires .. which just by chance happens to come as the Bush Administration is fighting for more clandestine surveillance on Americans and demanding 46 BILLION more dollars to fight the "war on terror" .. which just by chance also happens as "Bin Laden" releases a new video.
The gods must really smile on the neocon plutocrats who control this country, because the same "just by chance" happened to them on 9/11 which allowed them to do exactly what they planned before 9/11 and build a pipeline in Afghanistan and invade Iraq.
That is amazing.
