It's a very fair question. Politicians love to tell the public that we will be the beneficiary of something while not having to pay for it (someone else will pay for it). And because they are always working to get re-elected want to hide any potential sacrifices the voters will have to make.

A true leader in this scenario would say 1) this is why we are putting sanctions on Russia and 2) here might be the expected results of those sanctions (possibly negative for U.S. economy/energy prices). I think many people are willing to accept those negative consequences if they believe their leader(s) are being honest and they buy into why we are implementing the sanctions.
