Will gas and catalytic converter theft kill off the pick-up truck??

Trucks have high clearance and that makes them great choices for thievery. Usually big gas tanks too.

Most of these thieves are illegals BTW. One more reason to kick these monsters out.

For years now, scrap yards take I.D when you bring in copper/brass and catalytic converters. Especially a new converter. they know it was stolen.

The secondary one on one of my trucks was stolen some years ago. Cost me $40 at a muffler shop to get it straight piped since that one didn't have the engine sensor on it and had no effect on passing emissions. Actually improved the truck's performance too.

I'm surprised the muffler shop did that. Probably illegal.

Years ago you could buy "catalytic testers". They were more or less straight pipes and marketed as a tool to install in place of your CC to see if it was bad!! HAHA

Maybe they're still available.

Absolutely not. There's no law in AZ that prohibits it. Emissions testing here consists of plugging your vehicle in and seeing that there are no malfunctions on the test equipment.

I don't believe that. If it was true everyone would do that when a cat was stolen. Shops would advertise doing it. Do they?

3/4 ton trucks and above don't require emissions testing in my state.

Here, Pima and Maricopa counties have emissions testing. It costs $20 and you get your vehicle plugged into this test device and if you have no check engine light issues you pass. You wait 20 minutes in line for 5 minutes of testing.

This isn't true. Most modern vehicles have two catalytic converters installed. The first or primary is the one that removes like 95% of the pollution and is hooked up to the electronic monitoring system. The second removes another 3-ish percent or more. That one isn't monitored. On a Nissan pick up, that one is the target because the first one is OMG hard to get at.

So, thieves go after the low hanging fruit so-to-speak.

It's also getting harder for them as more people install security cameras and motion detectors on their homes.

We have it too, but some vehicles are considered 'commercial'. I believe increasing the RPM while idling will cheat the machine if your mechanic is your friend.

That's not the issue. It's still illegal for a repair shop to replace a cat with a straight pipe. As i said, if it was legal, everyone would do it when their cat was stolen.
