Gonzales: Deputy Was Pointman on Firings

By LARA JAKES JORDAN

WASHINGTON (AP) - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Tuesday he relied on his resigning deputy more than any other aide to decide which U.S. attorneys should be fired last year.

His comments come a less than a day after Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty announced he would resign at the end of the summer - a decision that people familiar with the plans said was hastened by the controversy over the purge of eight prosecutors.

"You have to remember, at the end of the day, the recommendations reflected the views of the deputy attorney general. He signed off on the names," Gonzales told reporters at a National Press Club forum in Washington. "And he would know better than anyone else, anyone in this room, anyone - again, the deputy attorney general would know best about the qualifications and the experiences of the United States attorneys community, and he signed off on the names."

Why in the world is this being discussed anyhoo?...Political 'appointees' can be fired for any or no reason whatsoever...what difference does it make why they were let go when no reason is necessary or required!

This is disgusting. Republicans are proud of this sort of weasly behavior?

Sort of a Clintonesque, yep they are appointees. But the lying about it seems to be the real issue.

would you like to be fired and have your ex employer tell the world that you were fired for performance problems when you were not fired for that reason ?

Moot point...I do not like Gonzales on his stand on prosecuting the Border Patrol Agents along with a Deputy in Texas...however I do not have all the facts on 'Their' performance...but I do on a certain US Attorney in Texas...and he should have been fired!...I really don't care about these who were fired for whatever reason....this was a pure and simple execution by Gonzales et al to take the heat off of Gonzales prejudice against border control..."thats all folks"
