New York City Legalizes Jaywalking
The law allows pedestrians to cross the street at any point and allows for crossing against traffic signals.
New York City Council Member Mercedes Narcisse, a Brooklyn Democrat who sponsored the new law, said that legalizing jaywalking ends racial disparities in its enforcement. She said that over 90 percent of the jaywalking tickets issued last year went to Black and Latino people.
"Laws that unfairly impact communities of color shouldn't exist," she said in an email to the AP.
