On the day after Labor Day, South Carolina Democrats blasted “Republican” Gov. Nikki Haley for slacking off on the job.

“It has been two weeks since Nikki Haley has shown up for work,” said S.C. Rep. James Smith (D-Richland). “Instead she has been chasing every news camera she can find in Florida and North Carolina, without the slightest concern for our disastrous 9.6 percent unemployment rate.”

South Carolina’s unemployment rate has climbed from 8.9 to 9.6 percent over the last three months. During that time period it has grown nearly three times as fast as the growth of the national rate – which ticked up from 8.1 to 8.3 percent.

Smith – an Afghan War veteran and former House Minority Leader – is one of several Democrats said to be looking at challenging Haley in the event S.C. Senator Vincent Sheheen doesn’t seek his party’s nomination again. Sheheen came within four points of defeating Haley two years ago in the mother of all Republican “wave” elections – and is reportedly pondering another run in 2014.

Gov. Nikki Haley's weeklong trip to Europe in June in search of "jobs, jobs, jobs" cost South Carolinians more than $127,000. But the governor and her entourage of more than two dozen returned without any finished deals to bring new employers to the Palmetto State.

Haley, who captured the governor's office preaching fiscal restraint, spent the cash so she, her husband and the rest of the state's contingent could stay in five-star hotels; sip cocktails at the Paris Ritz; dine on what an invitation touted as "delicious French cuisine" at a swanky rooftop restaurant; and rub elbows with the U.S. Ambassador to France at his official residence near the French presidential palace.

Instead of asking for a correction (which is what's done when a newspaper gets something wrong), Haley went after the reporter on Laura Ingraham's radio show:

HALEY: God bless that little girl at the "Post and Courier." Her job is to try and create conflict. My job is to create jobs. In the end, I`m going to have jobs to show for it.

Yeah, the jobs created in France. Oui!

What Lawrence didn't cover is how horribly sexist and dismissive this is. This is perhaps the most deplorable thing you can say about a professional woman who challenges you. I'm immune to being called a dude, drag queen or tranny. When I say something funny, I'm often called a lesbian - a compliment to lesbians, for sure. The c-word, the b-word, and the w-word. Calling me ugly, fat, old, stupid, bimbo, ditzy, over-Botoxed etc. etc. etc. I don't even notice anymore. I write under my real name. I have a column that runs in over 85 newspapers and all over the Internets. If I didn't want to be personally insulted by technology empowered strangers, I'd go live in a cabin and tap out my manifesto on a word processor.

But the phrase "little girl," (I've gotten, "silly little girl" twice in my professional career) its like no other. It's hard to think of anything more condescending than calling someone a feckless female child.

Yes, Republicans like to cry "feminist" when its suits them, but Haley sure loves the language of the "get back in the kitchen" crowd.

9.6 percent unemployment and she is stumping for Romney?????
That number would be lower if the the federal government had allowed Boeing to build the plants in South Carolina they wanted to instead of making them keep it in Washington.

Isn't that cute, you believed Haley's speech at the RNC, better fact check your statement!

LOL. I had no clue she gave a speech at the RNC. You think I wasted my time watching that? The reason I know what I said is true because only the federal government could keep someone from not going to South Carolina if they live in Washington. South Carolina is freaking awesome. All haters can fact check that.

The unions were the ones who sued and the only way the government got involved was through the courts.

Charleston is awesome.

Like I said they f'd South Carolina so half stays in Washington and half goes to the rival state that's hating in the first degree

It is hating for Washington not wishing to lose their jobs? I am sure the good people of Washington don't agree. I wonder how much Boeing pays their Carolinians in a right to work state!

Luttig received 3.7 million in 2009 while workers in Carolina got $18 an hour! Isn't that nice!

Right? Now I'm admittedly biased because my family came to Charleston from Germany six generations ago so my father, grandfather, his father etc. were all born there. I haven't been to Charleston in a long time but they had something in the local paper here not to long ago that some supposedly respected travel publication for the first time ranked Charleston as the number one tourist destination and San Francisco number two. Now rankings like that really don't mean much but it obviously acknowledges there is something good about Charleston.

At the end of the day shouldn't it be up to the company where they want to/choose to house their employees? If a company decides to locate in a place where labor cost is cheaper and those lesser paid employees turn out a worst product/customer service/etc. then the company will suffer as a result. If a company feels it can lower its labor costs but not lose any of its quality why is it in the wrong to do so?

Robbing Peter to pay Paul. I guess the company decided it made them look bad, especially when 3.7 million is given to the top dog. Washington had a right to protect their workers from the loss of jobs.

It's not robbing Peter to pay Paul. Unless we want to declare all companies are non-profits or are charitable institutions I'm not sure how a company is in the wrong for attempting to put itself in a position to be most competitive. What does this Luddik's $3.7 million have to do with anything?

Well, Cawacko, you are a smart man, I'm sure you can figure it out. It has one thing to do with the 1% and grossly over compensated CEO's hen a business is moving an industry to save money. The robbing Peter(Washington) to pay Paul (the CEO) doesn't look good for the company, the reason they decided to leave the machinist in Washington.

Labor board drops complaint against Boeing over S.C. plant

The National Labor Relations Board dropped its much-disparaged action against Boeing Co. on Friday, a move praised by Republicans as overdue but one that deprives the GOP of one of its most reliable talking points in its criticism of the Obama administration.

The NLRB filed a complaint against Boeing in March accusing the aerospace company of establishing a nonunion production line in South Carolina in retaliation against union workers in Washington state for past strikes.

How those non-union slave wages working out for you there?

Let's not forget Boeing is funded with tax dollars here....they get a paycheck from the US taxpayers.
