WTF is up with these creepy mortgage/scholarship ads?

I've seen these ads everywhere on the interwebs, including this site. Here's an example:

This geezer is clearly very pissed off about his mortgage.

I've also been greeted by this startling character. Apparently Gandolf is looking for a better rate.

What's even funnier are the scholarship ads that depict a 80-year-old man. Personally, I think the last thing I'll worry about when I'm 80 years old is going to college...

I checked with AdSense, and they told me that only closeted girly-groaners stupid enough to fall for these pitches get 'em.
