US farm bill prospects 'dead'
Tuesday, 20/11/2007
Chances of a new US farm policy this year appear to have been dashed.
The US Senate has failed to end a procedural fight on a controversial farm bill.
Senate Republicans refused, in a key vote, to agree to a demand by Democrats to restrict amendments.
But Democrats claim White House veto threats are really at the heart of the Senate bill's failure, so far.
Senate Agriculture Chairman, Tom Harkin, said: "I think some of their political people have told them 'you can't veto a farm bill. You want to lose all of rural American for the Republican Party next year? You can't veto that farm bill'.
"And so, what the White House has done, is said 'kill the bill here'."
US Acting Agriculture Secretary, Chuck Conner, has called the farm bill trade-distorting, lacking any real reform, and dishonest in how it's funded.
