2 Ex-Air Marshals Get Prison Terms

HOUSTON (AP) -- Two former federal air marshals have been sentenced to prison for accepting $15,000 bribes to bypass airport security and smuggle cocaine on a flight to Las Vegas.

Burlie Sholar III, 38, and Shawn Ray Nguyen, 32, admitted in plea bargains that they accepted the money to use their positions to smuggle 33 pounds of cocaine.

That was quick! Weren't they just arrested a couple of weeks ago? Good thing they went for the plea bargain -- the authorities must have had them cold, no room to maneuver. I wish that more such cases could be resolved so expeditiously.

It makes you wonder what else is going on -- what kind of background checks do they do on these people, anyway?

How many exist? The idea that nobody ever hired for the position would ever break the law is a bit ridiculous. That there have only been two caught playing the game shows that background checks are done pretty well.

Good question, but I suspect 2 out of the total number is a fairly high percentage. Probably higher than that of busted cops.
