That is part but it was more than that.
If Pence and the Senate cannot complete the Count, for any reasons, the Constitution requires it be sent to the House for a Contingent Election vote. The Republi'cans' held the most votes, in that instance, and if they stuck together they would vote Trump as POTUS again.
The dem's would then run to the SC, crying unfair, but the Constitution gives the SC no role in this process. Separation of Powers says this is handled by Congress. First by Pence and the count. And the back up to any indecision is the Contingent Election.
So even if the SC defied the Constitution (which they might do) and ruled against the Contingent Election anyway, saying some version of 'Pence and the Senate must have the ability to redo and certify the State Electors', Trump and his position was to be the SC has no Constitutional role here, the House has voted and COnstitution has been followed. We are not leaving power.
And Trump wanted the Constitutional crisis.
So say, the Military and other would not support Trump, but in fact, he would be right about him winning via the Constitutional process. The problem is no one contemplated a rogue Potus blocking the Senate vote, that he knew he lost, to trigger a House vote, he believed he could win.
That is something that would have to be handled by impeachment, which Trump knew would not get thru.
