I think multiculturalism is taught to students (especially in college seminars) the same way acceptance of the handicapped is taught. Not only does it seem demeaning, but it's only going to appear weak and decrepit. Students will mostly react in a protective or condescending manner.

I mean, in the old days of America first, students were forced to study a foreign language (much more intensely than today) and study classics, Greek, Latin, and seriously study world history (rather than haphazardly survey it). They actually came to see their dependence upon the Old World, and to see their place within the world community.
