An article on the CT tragedy that actually makes sense.

The following article is about a quote attributed to Morgan Freeman. I have no idea whether he actually said it or not. But it does, in my opinion, cut to the heart of the matter.

"Yesterday’s shooting was beyond tragic words alone cannot convey the sympathy and horror felt due to the event. Across Facebook people have been posting frantically about gun control and placing the blame on the fact God has been taken out of school.

This examiner happened to stumble across the words of Morgan Freeman and his thoughts on the event on Friday as well as other mass shootings.

Morgan Freeman: "You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single victim of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

Freeman’s words give pause for thought and reflection. I pose this question to the reader: What do you think? Are people seeking attention and notoriety because of the way the media portrays them? People who commit suicide often feel like they are alone and a nobody. In this case did Lanza decide he wanted to go down in history books by making his name synonymous with monstrosity?"

Though I appreciate the sentiment Freemans solution bears the same problem as strict gun control. We have certain rights in this country and those rights come with certain responsibilities.

The hard question, whether is is in regards to people using arms irresponsibly or the media using free speech irresponsibly is, what do we do to fix this public safety problem within the parameters of respecting these individuals rights?

I mean no disrespect to Mr. Freeman and I do see his point but it's not a usefull solution. So what is?

We have some hard thinking to do about some real hard questions but this can't continue.

we can help by no longer worshiping guns and their power.

Fox news and people on the right act like guns are toys and harmless sport accessories

have you ever seen a hunting christmas card?

I have seen plenty.

the right treats them like they are the most wonderful things in the world.

Killing animals for FUN.

they teach their kids that killing is a great sport and makes them better people than folks like me who dont find killing fun.

I think hunting (and the firearms used for that) and the tragedy in CT are very separate issues.

Mental health issues are far more relevant to the topic than a bolt action hunting rifle would be.

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – More men are buying guns as Christmas gifts for their wives and children.

Coal Creek Armory employees say their industry is increasingly seen as family-friendly. Sales are up roughly 20 percent from this time last year because most shoppers are men looking to purchase guns for their family.

"I bought two guns for my boys," said Bryan Burnett, a customer who came in to shop for Christmas gifts for his teenage sons.

"The biggest growth in this industry is with women and children," explained Jonathan Carter, who works at the store.

As I have said many times on these forums, I travel extensively for work. I also live in a rural area. My wife and daughter are home alone in an area where the police response time could be 20+ mins. Yes, they have firearms. Protection from human predators is only part of that. They have also shot at or shot coyotes several times. And have killed one rabid acting raccoon.

are you SO naive that you think merely asking them to not report the story or some parts of it so we dont hear it would EVER be a reasonable solution?

I think the fact that we WANT to hear all the bloody details speaks volumes about our society.

Look at these two names: Dylan Klebold & Steven Curnow

I'm betting most people know the first one and almost no one knows the second.
