Bill Maher goes to the White House for a dinner with Trump

I don't always agree with Bill Maher, but I definitely agree with his decision to try to have dinner with Trump and with Trump's decision to agree to it. Below is Mr. Maher's 13 minute summation of his dinner there:

I listened to the whole thing, and I for one am glad it happened. Maher was clearly critical of Trump at some points, but I got the distinct impression that he was trying to find common ground, and I think he definitely found it.

Quoting from the introduction and the conclusion of the above summation below:

Okay, as you know, 12 days ago, I had dinner with President Trump. A dinner that was set up by my friend Kid Rock, because we share a belief that there's got to be something better than hurling insults from 3,000 miles away. And let me first say that to all the people who treated this like it was some kind of summit meeting, you're ridiculous. Like I was going to sign a treaty or something. I have no power, I'm a comedian, and he's the most powerful leader in the world. I'm not the leader of anything, except maybe a contingent of centrist-minded people who think there's got to be a better way of running this country than hating each other every minute.

[snip]

So MAGA fans, don't worry, your boy gave me nothing. Just hats, hats and a very generous amount of time and a willingness to listen and accept me as a possible friend even though I'm not MAGA which was the point of the dinner. My favorite part of the whole night was we were standing in the [Clinton] blow job room (laughter). We were. And he said "You know I've heard from a lot of people who really like that we're having this dinner. Not all but a lot." And I said "Same. A lot of people told me they loved it, but not all." And we agreed, the people who don't even want us to talk, we don't like you. Don't talk as opposed to what, writing the same editorial for the millionth time and making 25 hour speeches into the wind? Really, that's what liberals had? He takes the piss out of everybody else and we can hold ours?

Okay, that's my report. You can hate me for it, but I'm not a liar. Trump was gracious and measured. And why he isn't that in other settings, I don't know and I can't answer. And it's not my place to answer. I'm just telling you what I saw, and I wasn't high. Damn, missed opportunity.

Your posts are annoyingly time consuming, I encourage you to be more courteous with my time, but I appreciate that you are trying to produce quality, and I appreciate that.

I definitely agree with your second point, lol :-). You're right, I am trying to produce quality. Honestly, I frequently feel like I should post -more-, not less in my posts, but there's only so much time in a day. I am aware that some people will skip over such posts, but people skipping over my posts is not what I dread the most- what I dread the most is that I write posts that lack enough meaningful content. Which may be why I tend to write longer posts, especially when it comes to opening posts.

Not having enough information is not remotely the problem that confronts us in 2025.

Maher suggested that Trump is playing make-believe. He says crazy shit but may not believe it. He keeps doing it because it works on those he has conned. Maher even mentioned Trump's 5 million dollar suit against him for telling a Trump joke. Trump gave him the impression that it was not a serious suit. Trump uses the courts to send dictatorial-type messages. Cross me and I will make your life more difficult.

As I've said, if I were American, I wouldn't have voted for him. But since he -is- President, I think it's a good idea to try to both see his good side and appeal to it.

For once, that was worth watching through. Thanks for that.

As if no powerful, rich, person in history ever before did that... :palm:
