Unless we implement proportional representation, the "two party system" is almost inevitable. It is conceivable that one of the two major parties could be replaced by a different party, but it is very unlikely.

Very true. The best, most mature way to influence the political process is to participate in it, not remove oneself entirely (which is the only thing that third parties accomplish). This is the grownup thing to do. Examples: Tea Party, Congressional Progressive Caucus.
