Two steps forward, one step back. The Trump Era will be known as America's One Step Back.
There is so much we are on the verge of, and we are trying to do it all on systems that have no been updated in 70 years. I know of 8 data centers who would be ready for AI computers, if they only had a power hookup. They have been waiting for years, and the delays are getting longer as time goes by.

One out of three of our bridges either need replacing, or major repairs. Our universities are about to get shutdown. I could go on and on.

It feels like one step back, two steps back, then some more steps back. We are not making progress.

Looking at the present and the previous few years is, indeed, disturbing, but looking back a hundred or more years gives me hope that this is just a cycle.

IIRC, you are about 20 years younger than me. I'm 69. The Bicentennial was when I was 20 years old. Vietnam was finally over, there were some problems, but things were looking better. The Greed Decade awaited along with the prosperity of the 90s DotCom Era. Then 9/11 happened followed by a decade of Bush's war in Iraq. I was 45, middle-aged, when it began and pushing 55 when it ended. It reminded me of looking at history. The young men who fought the Revolution in 1776 were, likewise, middle-aged when the War of 1812 began although the problems began in 1807.

School kids might see the history of the Revolution and the War of 1812 as being one paragraph apart, my analogy demonstrates that living through history takes more time. Same for the present day. Even if the step back is worrisome, history proves that human beings will, once again, take two steps forward. That or we all end up dead. LOL

I see what you are saying.

The Russian Empire included Finland, and Poland. The USSR immediately lost both, and then quickly lost the Baltic States(Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania). It two decades later regained the Baltic States, but then a half century after that lost the Baltic States, Ukraine, Belarus, and all the Central Asian Republics.

In the future, when the 70 years of the USSR seem like a blink of the eyes, it will be seen as the destruction of the Russian Empire. Putin will fantasize about reestablishing it, but he too will vanish.
