I wasn't a thief until 1997

Record companies have a history of being melodramatic.

I always found it interesting that copyrights in nations never lasted very long or were enforced very well until it was artists who stopped benefiting from them and corporations who started profiting off of monopoly.

Isn't it stealing to make a mix tape for your girlfriend?

Aren't libraries stealing? Think about all the money those people would be making if libraries didn't allow multiple uses of products? Aren't video rentals stealing? If you make yourself a telivision or any other product, aren't you stealing from the manufacturers of televions?
Actually before the tape manufacturers started paying a small portion of each sale of blank tapes they were going to go after the "theifs" of their intellectual property. Instead, tapes and VHS tapes had a portion that was paid to the makers of the originals, even when they weren't used for copying them. It was a way to keep selling blanks and both companies were happy.

If you aquire anything that is intended to be sold without paying for it, is it not theft ?

It used to be. But we have to keep in mind what exactly file sharing is.

If you were to go into a store and take a chair, well now there is one less chair in the market place that can be bought and sold

With filesharing however, you are making copies. The original product remains in the marketplace.

If anyone has had their fill of the enlightened despot Damocles then they are free to join Doniston, the last treacherous dog who dared bare his teeth to the great leader, in the underground bunker where the screams are only matched in volume by the piped music of Phil Collins.

He is watching.

Is he still watching? Geez.
