Speed and simplicity. You going to design a semi-conductor with 10 possible states and manage all that? Lots o' luck to you. ;)

Remember, anything you can do in octal or decimal or hex you can also do in binary. It's just a different notation. We're just not used to it is all.
 
ornot when i used to be bored in school i would just count in binary and write it down in my notebook.
