North Hyde sub station burns

Substations handle a lot of energy, so are prone to catch fire. That is more true with substations that are 70 years old.

It had emergency power backup, but that was not enough to run everything. To run everything, they would need an entire power station.

The solution here is a smart grid... It would be nice if America were to develop that, so the world would buy from us.
Grids are already smart, Wally. That's why you can dispatch power on them using remote control rooms. It's also why the ERIC doesn't have cold start events anymore. The WRIC never has had a cold start event because it's even more advanced than the ERIC after it's upgrade.

The UKIC is not as advanced as the ERIC, but it does pretty well.

Losing a substation serving a customer has nothing to do with 'smart' anything, Wally.
Heathrow airport has power sufficient to run radios long enough to get aircraft in the area on the ground. Takeoffs are blocked. Runway lights for a runway are also on emergency power, should power go out at night or in instrument conditions. Also, the ILS still operates.

But nothing takes off. The idea is to clear the skies around the airport and route traffic that has not yet arrived to an alternate airport until normal services can be restored at Heathrow.

Most US airports serving a lot of airlines have similar backup systems. When the ERIC collapsed into a cold start event in 1965 and again in 2003, Kennedy airport had no ILS, no runway lights, and no radios. In each case, they talked planes down using the radios of aircraft on the ground.

The ERIC has been improved by quite a lot since then, but places like Kennedy still lack facilities to even clear the skies safely should their power fail.

24 hours in and we are still supplied zero information on what the cause of this failure was, or why the airport was not prepared to operate through it, at massive economic costs and harm to people.
Heathrow airport cannot generate sufficient power to run the entire airport. It DOES have sufficient power backup to clear the skies of aircraft with reasonable safety.

Nothing takes off until full service can be restored.

Officials said there was no suggestion of foul play, but the cause is still under investigation. The fire brigade said its investigation would focus on the electrical distribution equipment at the substation.

Even so, London’s Metropolitan Police Service said counterterrorism detectives were leading the investigation because of the fire’s impact on critical national infrastructure.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said it was “an unprecedented event.”

“Obviously, with any incident like this we will want to understand why it happened and what if any lessons it has for our infrastructure,” he told Sky News.

Unprecedented???

Substations blow up all the time! It's usually due to faulty maintenance of equipment or storm damage.

That substation only handled the northeast sector of Heathrow.

Maybe Boeing installed the sub-station

Haw, haw...........................................haw.

Notice how other than "We cant find a way to blame the Russians for this" we are still told nothing about why this happened, or why the airport was unable to continue to run, with conflicting reports on whether the airport not being able to run was because of their net zero idiocy.

So it must be a conspiracy ffs!! Do you ever shut the fuck up?
Boeing doesn't build or install substations, moonbat.

Imagine if Hamass built airports, all the runways would be underground!

The people in charge are not telling the people what happened and why.....call it a conspiracy if you must....that word is rapidly joining the list of words that have been ruined by abuse.

And No.

The Rump of the UK has an obligation to provide the world answers regarding this massive failure of the Brits.
