It's not that simple, what do we get as far as a ruturn on the imports? What can countries do with US dollars that we buy their goods with? The current account balance is very decieving. But as far as Asshats concerned it's his competing with slaves nonsense I'm talking about.

No matter how you look at it our trade imbalance has sucked big time for many years.

And AHZ does have a point, how can we compete with dollar an hour or so labor in china and places ? Our standard of living must drop in a global economy. It is inevitable.
 
It's too close to a long 4th of July weekend to get in a long talk about trade. I just wanted to mess with AHZ quick. However I'm saying your not taking all the variables like return on investment and exchange rates into acount. Just looking at the balance is a bad indicator. Also, when one person can come up with a counter argument to Comparitive Advantage the slave labor stuff is a bad argument, at least in terms that it hurts us economically.
 
Put it this way, if our dollar continues to get weaker our exports will keep getting better and imports worse. You'd have better balance in the Current account but would we really be better off? Of course not...

yeah if we still had much to export ?

With the weaker dollare our imports cost more. and since we still import more than we export. Of course as things get worse here our imports will drop.
 
The midwest is doing very well in exports, Farmers in Grains, Corn, Soybeans ect..Also Computers and Software that comes from the coasts and don't forget Georgia Peaches...
