It's the type of leadership and nature of organization that matter. The most democratic and horizontally organized religious organization I have ever had experience with are the Quakers.

I've never attended a church where people seemed to be faking their belief, but I am sure there are counter examples of my experience.

But even then, I don't see how one can have a church, a civil rights organization, an environmental group, a humanitarian charitable NGO without having some organization, bureaucracy, leaders.

I don't think organization and administration make anything inherently evil.

It's the people involved who do or don't.

It’s the people

Organized religion indoctrinated their children


So they walk the walk


The talk the talk


Out of fear of reprisal


I have known people who spent their entire childhoods believing they were tainted as humans


They could not make themselves believe what their entire family structure spent every breath believing


Some of them grow up and leave the church


Some of them just stay out of lack of moral fiber to stand up for themselves



Some see a great way to have power among this existing power structure


They have been taught that going along to get along is just life


And they see a way to get what they want out of this structure


That is why pastors have multiple affairs


Rape kids



Steal church money



And get people to tell their secrets and then black mail them
