Required Reading for GOP

The absurdity of the fact that gerrymandering even works is one of the main reason that I oppose the plurality system. Plurality is like giving the majority the right to cast the minorities vote. This basic unfairness is the only reason gerrymandering works - having a majority in a majority of districts doesn't necessarily mean you have a majority over the entire area.

Of course, gerrymandering so much that you win a majority of districts with a minority of the vote is pretty hard. In practice, gerrymandering is usually used by the majority to ensure that the minority wins nothing, even when they have a significant portion of the votes. That can have a big effect nationwide. For instance, the Republicans can often win congress even when fewer people vote for them than the Democrats (this is primarily due to the self-gerrymandering Democrats have done to themselves with minority majority district).

Gerrymandering take power away from individual voters is evil.

Gerrymandering to increase the power of idividual voters is wonderful.

Its all about wether its better for democracy.

I don't care that they are doing what I used to say was evil when a different party did it just so long as it is good for the Democratic Party.

Okay, good for them.

I guess the realpolitik of actual massive voter support is not something the neocons are interested in. They'd rather stick with their internationlist fascist treachery and still keep wedging everyone with abortion and gay marriage.

Yep, the GOP has been the master of wedge issues since it denounced slavery and polygamy back in 1854.

After Coolidge Hoover and then after Reagan and the Bushs (Clinton too), we can only hope they are the minority again for a long long time. America was greatest when America was liberal and progressive. America is lost when corporate greed and the rich rule.

If you want to read a excellent history book, one of the best out there read, Manchester's 'Glory and the Dream.'

Gerrymandering - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:The_Gerry-Mander_Edit.png" class="image"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/96/The_Gerry-Mander_Edit.png/200px-The_Gerry-Mander_Edit.png"@@AMEPARAM@@commons/thumb/9/96/The_Gerry-Mander_Edit.png/200px-The_Gerry-Mander_Edit.png

Gerrymandering is a form of boundary delimitation (redistricting) in which electoral district or constituency boundaries are deliberately modified for electoral purposes, thereby producing a contorted or unusual shape. The resulting district is known as a gerrymander; however, that word can also refer to the process.

Gerrymandering may be used to achieve desired electoral results for a particular party, or may be used to help or hinder a particular group of constituents, such as a political, racial, linguistic, religious or class group.

When used to allege that a given party is gaining disproportionate power, the term gerrymandering has negative connotations. However, a gerrymander may also be used for purposes that some perceive as positive, notably in US federal voting district boundaries which produce a proportion of constituencies with an African-American or other minority in the majority (these are thus called "minority-majority districts").

The history of this tool is to keep minorities votes from having any impact. When you use this tool to ensure peoples votes dont get diluted and are truely represented then it is a good thing.

Again, Desh. We all know what gerrymandering is, the idea that it is better because your party will be doing it is just hackery.

No its the reason it is done for.

To usher in democracy or to dilute the votes of certain people in this country.

It is a good thing to empower groups whos voice has been stunted by chickanery

Its done for the benefit of one party or one candidate or one type of candidate, which screws democracy. Only idiots think otherwise.

No its not asshole and that is why courts have upheld these things when the intent is determined to be a benifit to democracy.

bullshit. the courts have upheld it because it's the legislatures constitutional duty to do it. Not because it benefits a democracy. you're such a hack.

Or, in the case of CO, they upheld it because of political affiliation of the courts. The SCOTUS is 5-2 appointed by Ds in CO.
