Is there a link to that? If the murdered teen said that it was completely unacceptable ...however that isn't a reason to kill someone... Kids say terrible things to each other... I wonder where they learn that? But most kids don't fight by stabbing someone in the heart... at a track meet...

Whites carrying illegal guns have been allowed to claim self-defense. The case law is very specific on that. You cannot even come up with a law against carrying a knife.

No, actually not. You cannot be in the "process of performing criminal activities or committing a criminal act." But you could have performed criminal acts at other times. For instance, you can be cheating on your taxes, and still shoot someone in a bar. You can buy a gun illegally, and still use that gun later in legal self defense.
I will bet you that he always has a knife in his backpack, as do many people, so was not intending to stab anyone that particular day. How would he know that he would run into a violent racist that particular day?
