But you will have background checks out the ass and the BATF will be able to search your home (or wherever you say you store the weapons) without warning.

Nah, skip the big stuff and buy a shotgun. Same result with less mess.

And still I find it funny. It certainly doesn't garner any trust for him and I find it a bit politically cowardly.
