What is hell?

Jesus: the outer darkness, an unquenchable fire, a place of no return.
Buddhism: a place of torment, not eternal, but inconcievably long.
Catholic Church: Described mainly as a separation from God.
Anglican Church: Permanent annihilation and the extinguishing of all consciousness.

Hell is the 21st Century United States of America.

At least 77 million+ entities who somehow qualify as American citizens
are actually steaming piles of pigshit at their moral and intellectual essence.

I regret not having the communicative skills
to even begin to describe my seething hatred for them.

Hell is listening to non-stop Christmas music my wife plays all through December.

Religion is for morons.

Eternal separation from God

Hell is a wonderful invention of the early Christians leveraging the Greek concepts of an afterlife complete with punishment/rewards. It didn't really exist in Judeo-Christianity before, and arguably the terms "Gehenna" and other descriptions of the "outer darkness" are a reference to the grave.

Hell is a wonderful invention in that it solves the need to provide any reason to actively believe in God and replaces it with the threat of eternal torment if you fail to believe in the proper way.

This really makes it much easier on God since He is under no requirement to provide any proof of his existence, but if you get it wrong He gets to punish you forever and ever and ever. And it's 1000X easier on the Believers because all they need to do is threaten people with this rather than living according to their own morality or attempting to bring someone into the faith willingly.

Atheists will learn the lesson. Yes they will.

Eternal separation from God

The "separation" hypothesis is definitely a much more theologically palatable concept than the concept of a vituperative vicious punishing God who grants INFINITE punishment for sins committed in a finite amount of time. (Same God as who so loved the world...)

Hell is an invention of Christians.

Hell is based on choices not God. Anyone bent on going to hell wouldnt be happy in heaven anyway. God does so love the world but he doesnt force anyone to love him in return. No one would call that love.

LOL. No. Sorry. If Hell exists then GOD CREATED IT. If God created it is 100% His idea and His plan.

God does so love the world but he doesnt force anyone to love him in return.

If someone pointed a gun at my head and said "either you love me or I annihilate you" I'd say that's about the same thing.

No one would call that love.

Correct. Yet it is the religion that many Christians have. You literally see it every day as they ponce about fantasizing about what will happen to those "hell bent on going to hell" or who act differently from the "Christians".

He did create it but you choose not him.

You could say it's the same thing but it's not.

It's amazing to me how many people want freedom but not the responsibility of that freedom. Choices have consequences.

The Buddhists had a well developed concept of hell centuries before Christianity
Plato writes in The Republic four centuries before Jesus about a transcendent place of punishment that evildoers will ultimately wind up in.
I know some Buddhist but none claim it to be a common belief about hell.

Not familiar with that section of Plato. But I agree with nothing Plato says, he is an authoritarian
