The same reason a little kid prefers the aunt who gives them candy each visit over the aunt who doesn't. You hear "we're gonna do for you..." and despite the fact that nothing ever changes, you continue to believe these people are actually going to do something, someday. The Democrats prey on your self interests, and have discovered they can depend on your vote by doing so.
It's really no different than the days of slavery... Why is it that black people refused to leave the plantations in such high numbers? It's because plantation owners knew the same trick as Democrats... give you just enough to make you believe they're on your side, there to care for you, there to take care of your needs. It's scary out there, off the plantation, you have no way to support yourself, you're just a slave, what can you do? It's far better that you remain enslaved and owned by your master who treats you okay and takes care of you.
The Republicans, on the other hand, have never played this game with you. They don't single out special interest groups and promise them dangling carrots, in exchange for their vote. Republicans believe you are just like every other American, and that we're stronger as a nation when we all work together for common goals. You don't get "special treatment" because you are black, but this also means you an equal partner, deserving of the same honor and glory as everyone else, whenever greatness is achieved.
