40 hour minimum wage job not enough for 2 bedroom apartment

Really? Our subject never needs to do laundry? or buy clothes? or toothpaste? shampoo?

And no, 'upkeep' isn't necessary monthly. Let's look at what's necessary every so often - couple of times a year: brakes, oil changes, etc. Every couple of years or so - tires. Add those expenses up and then break them out by month.

It adds up.

Nobody buys clothes "monthly" when they live on minimum wage, and I already told you where you can get clothes in that budget. Shoot, I still stop by the Goodwill on occasion, sometimes there is some incredible finds there.

And, I forgot, the public transport in LA is better than it is in Denver by a long shot. The bus would have done fine for me. Although, as I said, I could have afforded a car. I simply chose against it to put more towards an education. Later I joined the Navy and became much less well paid, but better educated.

As for oil changes, I do those myself, as well as brakes, etc. It takes something HUGE for me to be unable to do the work myself... I've even changed out engines. I mean, the car would likely be destroyed before I couldn't fix the thing.

Mental illness is another factor. I have several friends who are very intelligent but because they are mentally ill it is hard for them to gain employment.

Exactly - mental illness, learning disabilities, etc. All of these have a factor on employability.

That was presented where in your scenario? They don't have a family to support them in their time of need? They aren't capable of working at an intellectual level?

If you want to work with a hypothetical scenario, set the parameters out FIRST.

This

How does one go to school to 'increase their knowledge and skillset' when they're barely making ends meet?

I got loans and paid for it over time, paying what I could out of pocket.

I sure wish I had the life you must have lived in order to be entirely ignorant of what that life was like. It wasn't that bad, but surely you can't be this naive. That has to be at least partially an act.

how can i do this?

:D

Not in your parameters. You keep trying to move the goal posts. Of course, "one" knows that there are available programs for the disabled.

I haven't moved a single goalpost. Nowhere did I assert that the hypothetical subject had a mental disorder of any kind.

Rana simply mentioned it as a factor and I agreed.

Did you know that it's possible to have a discussion with someone who doesn't agree and/or has a different point of view and it doesn't mean they're 'entirely ignorant'? ;)

Lighten up.

I am simply describing part of my life, there really is no "agree" or "disagree" involved. What I am saying is ignorance clearly is, there is nothing wrong with that though. I'm glad your life was blessed and a bit easier than mine.

"One" can survive by doing what I said, I know because I did.

his mother, my wife, asked me for help.

Why didn't you stand up for your conservative principles and tell her "your "21 year old stepson needs to be responsible for himself"?

Isn't helping someone who should be helping themselves kind of...Socialist?

Not always

Damocles is an example to us all.

With nothing more than determination and hard work, he's achieved the American dream, and anybody else can do the same if they want to.

Asking others to help is nothing short of Socialism!

Why, you don't see him with a "DONATE" button on his site, do you?

Interesting, but ultimately useless.

Community College classes in Southern California are out of the price range for minimum wage earners. There aren't enough grants for everyone who needs them. Further, the CC system here is overburdened due to the exorbitant pricing at universities so it is next to impossible for first-timers to even get in the door.
The gov already spends way more than is sustainable, especially in broke as Cali!
