A majority of Americans — and nearly six in 10 Republicans — don’t know enough about Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, regarded as the current front-runner to be Mitt Romney’s vice presidential nominee, to offer an opinion about him, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Fifty-one percent of the public has no opinion of Portman, the highest “no opinion” score among the 50 other people, issues and actions tested in weekly Post-ABC polls since last September.

Among those who did have an opinion on Portman, it wasn’t good; just 19 percent view him favorably, while 30 percent see him in an unfavorable light. (Among Republicans, 21 percent viewed Portman favorably while 22 percent regarded him unfavorably.)

I wish he would pick Trump or Rubio, but he wont unless he feels desperate, at this point he has no reason to feel desperate.

Why do you feel Rubio would be a desperate pick?

He is very young, fairly inexperienced, has at least three scandals one still being investigated, and further alienates the sourthern conservative. Additionally, I dont belive that he helps with the Hispanic vote as much as CW says.

Also ties to the Mormon Church will harm him with the religous right. (Stated at the risk of igniting another round of being called a bigot.)

1) He is 41, six years younger than what Obama was when he ran for President in 2008 (JFK was 43 when elected President)
2) He has more experience than Obama had when Obama ran for President in 2008
3) He is a Christian who has great support from southern conservatives (especially the tea party)... so you need to elaborate on how he would alienate them
4) He has no ties to the Mormon Church by his choice. He was born a Catholic and with the exception of a few years of his life, raised as one. He did attend the LDS from 8-11 years of age. You are a fucking idiot if you think this is going to alienate southern conservatives. Or did you not notice they already support him despite the LDS 'ties'???

The LDS ties for both Rubio (which to me is a desperate stretch) and Romney are way overblown, IMO.

Portmans a good man. He has both private sector and public sector experience. Is well educated, has executive experience and isn't an ideologue. His biggest drawback is that he was W's Trade Negotiater. That doesn't go over well in the industrial midwest. He certainly meets the most basic qualification in that he would be qualified to be chief executive if something happened to Romney.....something people really questioned about Palin. Portman is also a very vanilla personality which is an excellent trait in a Veep.

1) President Obama was young to be elected president, Kennedy was very young, still if Romney died... Rubio would be the youngest yet.

2) How so?

3) Rubio is a Hispanic Catholic, have you ever spent much ome with Southern Conservatives? Many don't like Cubans and don't believe Catholics are Christian. (just ask Dixie)

4) First you say he has no ties to the Mormon Chirch, then you acknoledge he was a Mormon?

Only if Romney died within five months of taking office. Still... how can you say he is a risk due to his age as a VP, when the other candidate was not much older when elected President? It makes no sense. No one is going to say... oh gosh, he is 41, that is way too young. (fyi... Gore was 44 when elected VP)

2) How so?

More years in the Florida House than Obama had in Illinois. They will have served the same amount of time as Senator... and again, Rubio would be VP not President.

3) Rubio is a Hispanic Catholic, have you ever spent much ome with Southern Conservatives? Many don't like Cubans and don't believe Catholics are Christian. (just ask Dixie)

Again Jarod... if they have such a hard time with him, why does he do so well with them now?

4) First you say he has no ties to the Mormon Chirch, then you acknoledge he was a Mormon?

No Jarod, I said he had no Mormon ties by his choice. His parents attended (and brought their children) for a few years of his life. He had no choice in that matter. You are simply trying to display your ignorance in full force again. His 'Mormon ties' would not be any type of major deterrent to voters.

He lied regarding his family's immigration the USA.
A lobbiest was alleged to have paid his mortgage.
He used a Republican Party credit card fraudulently for personal services such as back waxing to tge tune of thousands of dollars!

Dude has one hairy back, one thing I am not excited about. Don't know much about this guy.

I think he should pick a welder!

Rob Portman has no name recognition outside Ohio.....Romney needs someone that people know......

I don't know about a welder, I was thinking more in the area of "community organizer".....

Would you like a list of the allegations about Obama and a list of his lies ?

Neither hurt his campaign for president at all.....

He will be well known if Romney picks him.
