Is America so bad?

many liberals would have you believe so. they would have you believe we are ruled by some so called 1%.

if america is that tyrannical...why are so many doing everything they can to get there? from all over the world.

this is where liberalism and i part ways. this country has flaws. no doubt. but what you mostly hear from the left is how horrible this country is. i can't even recall a positive thread started by a liberal on this board about this country. it is virtually the same with the news. though...cnn...has became far more neutral than a few years ago.

i don't mind raising taxes on those making over 500K. the wealthy do have greater influence over government. as do corporations and unions. can you find me a government where this doesn't exist?

can you find me a government where all men are "equal"?

Conservatives complain about our country quite often, as well - that we're becoming socialist, communist, a land without liberty, etc.

But that's beside the point. There is America the ideal, and America the reality. Many who complain about America do so because they believe in America the ideal - what the founders envisioned for the country, and what we are supposed to represent.

I have always rejected the argument that it's good enough or whatever that we're the best game in town.

i don't think conservatives complain about the country onceler. they complain about liberals.

america is an ideal. and still remains an ideal that has not been fully realized.

America has a more prevalent and extreme version of the "mainstream right", a position I'd define as the "nourish no one" position, than in most countries. However, as a brightspot, the far right, who don't necessarily have a problem with nourishing as long as it doesn't go to the "wrong sort" (and, therefore, they want to kick all non-whites out of the country), isn't nearly as politically mainstream. The only really similar movement would be white nationalism. There are, of course, those who put a particular emphasis on harassing illegals, and want to limit immigration somewhat, but there is practically no one who want to throw out non-white citizens and cut off any and all immigration.

Is America so bad? I think it begs the question of what it means to be an American; and, more fundamentally, what we stand for as Americans. Do we stand for freedom and equality? Freedom and equality are ideals; but, absent a perfect world, no one can live in society and be entirely free or completely equal. For every freedom there is a corresponding obligation to others, and equality is limited to the extent that such obligations are mutual, and others do not demand rights without responsibility for their exercise. In this, the promise of America is not freedom and equality, but rather liberty and equal opportunity and justice under law. But such promise cannot be kept when government instituted by men favors the few in derogation of the many, or serves the special interests at the expense of the public interest, and when the rich and powerful can have more justice than the poor and oppressed.

America is a nation of laws and not men. But the law can be both used and abused by men; and so it is the duty and responsibility of every citizen to oversee those who make and enforce the laws and administer justice lest our democratic institutions be turned into a tyranny over us.

Spot-on:

Gee Yurt...where did you find all this straw to burn?

I reject the xenophobia and ethnocentrism that is implied too. That's why Yurts OP is a strawman. The fact that you recognize that there are other great cultures on this planet besides our own is an unpatriotic act for some bizzare reason to ideological conservatives. Their sentiments are based on fear of the unknown and the outside world and for some illogical rationale with these types of conservatives respecting other people on this planet is an act of treason to them.

Well that's to bad for them really. I was open minded enough and willing to appreciate and learn about other cultures and because I was willing to do so an absolutely adorable woman fell in love with me and I married an immigrant and she has done nothing but enriched my life in ways I could have never imagined.

It's to bad that these cowardly conservatives are soooo afraid of the outside world that they shake in their boots and shit their pants in fear of these people that the'll never learn what I have. What a shame that being a coward does this to people.

The fact is, is that liberals dont' hate their country. The fact is conservatives cowardly behavior prevents them from fully loving their nation and the diversity of people we have in it as much as liberals do.

I feel so sad for these conservatives. It must be truly horrific living your life in fear. I'm sure glad though that I'm not such a coward. :)

Be specific and then I'll answer.

IF you read my post and what I quoted, it's quite clear what I'm 'in agreement' with.

for instance, it's currently illegal for citizens to possess or sell marijuana, yet police possess and sell it all the time to entrap people in to breaking the law. shouldn't it be illegal for cops to possess and sell marijuana, even if it's in the performance of their duties?

That's another whole ball of wax. The drug war and its tactics are all pretty ridiculous in my view. It's pathetic how little we learned from Prohibition.

I'm for the decriminalization of marijuana, absolutely. But until then, the cops are going to use whatever they want to catch 'bad guys'.

so your so called 'spot on' comment to Nemos post was nothing more than a liberal 'hi 5', but you don't actually believe it?

1) America is great, and to keep it that way we must fight the attempts at making the 1% more powerfull and tyranical.
2) The perception of what America is from outsiders is often much better than the reality. I once was on a very nice fishing boat owned by my uncle, in the Florida Keys when we picked up a raft of Cubans, we took them back to my uncle's beaufifull house on the water called border patrol and while wating on them to come get the guys, we made them dinner. The Cubans were so excited about being here, spoke no English and had no education. They told us about how they expected to get a house just like my Uncle's 1.5 million dollar house once they were able to get a job and save up for three or four years.

Are you retarded? Are you scarred from years of academic failure and frustrating reading comprehension defects? Is that why you chose a moniker that belies obvious truth?

I have neither the desire nor the required patience to attempt to explain which points of Nemo's I agreed with and why to an imbecile. Next.....

so you won't divulge your reasoning for agreeing about the USA being a nation of laws, not men and then turn right around and say it's all about this situation? in other words you have no hard position? or is it that you can't reconcile the fact that you just got outed as a hypocrite?
