Another sweltering weekend brought more violence to Chicago’s streets – with eight people killed and 37 others wounded in shootings or stabbings between Friday afternoon and early Monday morning.

The first fatal shooting happened early Saturday about 1:50 a.m. in the 5200 block of South Honore Street, in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said.

Antonio Buck, 32, of the 5400 block of South Aberdeen Street, was killed in the shooting, and a woman was left in “guarded” condition with a gunshot wound to the shoulder, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

At 6:22 p.m. on Saturday, Bernardo Hernandez, 30, was shot in the head in the 10700 block of South Hoxie Avenue in the South Deering neighborhood, authorities said. Hernandez, of the 2300 block of South Whipple Street, was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn on Sunday.

Later Saturday Shakaki Asphy, 16, died after she was shot three times in the chest in Englewood neighborhood, officials said. The shooting occurred about 7 p.m. in the 2000 block of West 70th Place and also wounded Leon Cunningham, 18.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports someone in a gray hoodie came running through the gangway and opened fire as the Asphy, a Harper High School student, was sitting on the porch of a home with friends.

A total of 37 others — mostly men in their 20s and 30s — were wounded in the non-fatal shootings and one stabbing that took place across the city. Many of the wounded were treated at area hospitals in stable condition, though five of the wounded were initially treated in critical condition.

The youngest victim was a 15-year-old boy who was shot in the 1000 block of North Long Avenue, in the South Austin neighborhood, about 11 p.m. Friday when someone opened fire at a vehicle he was riding in, police said. The driver took him to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the lower back.

Meanwhile, as the blood flowed into the streets, 200 Chicago police were busy working security at the wedding of Valerie Jarrett’s daughter. What a shame. Perhaps some lives could have been saved if those 200 cops were out on patrol. I suspect the media won’t make the connection, but they sure would if all these police were guarding the Republican’s wedding.

Hey, Chicago has given us some of the sleaziest vermin in the history of this republic. One need look no further than today's Oval Office to attest to that.

I've noticed this trend since the Trayvon Martin killing.

Racists feel the need to bring up crime statistics like pacifists did troop deaths during the Iraq War. Neither accomplishes anything and neither honors the victims.

The fact is there's a small increase in crime because of the recession, which is hardly Obama's fault. Still, acccording to the tables in the accompanying article, the crime level isn't even close to the levels it was during the Bush regime. Even in Chicago.

One thing that's puzzled people about crime during the economic downturn, if not necessarily criminologists, was that there wasn't a crime wave following the economic collapse. It would seem logical: more deprivation, more people out of work and with less to risk and to do, more crime. It wasn't the case in the '30s, however, and it hasn't been the case nationwide, as violent crime famously continues to decline.

But I've been looking at crime data for the past few days, and there does seem to have been a noticable bump in certain crimes in Chicago accompanying the most dramatic spike in unemployment. Not a large one, but one that did check ongoing declines and cause a murmur in murder rates.

Even so, according to the Chicago Police Department (p 14

As I pointed out elsewhere, most crimes are committed by someone the victim knows. According to this study, from 2005, most are intraracial, not interracial. Please note (again) the levels of all crimes have decreased since the Bush era.

From 1976 to 2005 --

86% of white victims were killed by whites
94% of black victims were killed by blacks

Whether or not this number changes as a result of anything, remains to be seen and can't be stated as a fact until the numbers come out. Additionally, whether these crimes are hate crimes is a totally different story. By far, the greatest majority of hate crimes are committed by whites:

In 1996, the FBI received reports of 10,706 hate crimes from State and local law enforcement agencies, involving 11,039 victims, and 10,021 known perpetrators. The crimes included 12 murders, 10 forcible rapes, 1,444 aggravated assaults, 1,762 simple assaults, and 4,130 acts of intimidation.

Among the known perpetrators, 66 percent were white, and 20 percent were black. Some perpetrators commit hate crimes with their peers as a "thrill" or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol; some as a reaction against a perceived threat or to preserve their "turf'; and some who out of resentment over the growing economic power of a particular racial or ethnic group engage in scapegoating.

Have these numbers changed? I don't know but doubt it. Especially when any numbers found to the contrary come from websites quoting Stormfront. :whoa:

So....why don't we quit making unfounded claims and work together to end hate?
