"Monday" is a racial slur

I thought I had heard a lot of racial slurs but this was a new one to me.

Massachusetts officer put on paid leave for slur directed at Red Sox's Crawford

A Massachusetts police officer was put on paid leave Wednesday after an internal investigation found that he directed a racial slur at Boston Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford.

Officer John Perrault was suspended pending a disciplinary hearing scheduled for next week at which he could face more severe punishment, and could even be fired, Leominster mayor Dean Mazzarella and police chief Robert Healey said.

Perreault engaged in conduct unbecoming an officer, according to the chief and mayor.

The officer, who is white, was placed on desk duty after the July 5 incident. He was described as a veteran officer with no prior disciplinary problems.

He was off duty and attending a minor-league game in Manchester, N.H.

Witnesses said a heckling fan called Crawford, who is black, a "monday" before a game between the New Hampshire Fisher Cats and Portland Sea Dogs. Crawford said he interpreted the word as a racial slur.

The word can be used as a derogatory term for blacks, and is often associated with Mondays being one of the least-liked days of the week.

Crawford was playing for the Double-A Sea Dogs while rehabilitating a wrist injury.

Crawford alerted stadium officials to the remark, and team management apologized.

Leominster police reached out to Crawford as part of their investigation but did not talk to him, Mazzarella said.

The mayor and chief also issued an apology to Crawford.

Crawford returned to action for the Red Sox on Monday night, in a 5-1 victory against the Chicago White Sox.

I have never heard this one either. It's amazing the time and effort these asshats put into coming up with slurs. If they spent that much time and energy working maybe they wouldn't be the kind of hate-filled, bitter losers looking for someone to blame.

I had to look it up on racial slur database and it was in there. It's offensive because No one likes Mondays. Not sure why that would be directed at any particular group. It seems like some dumb term one person would tell another when you are 13 years old. "You're a Monday because no one likes you".

I'm surprised others at the stadium knew the guy was using it as a deragatory racial remark. Freaking weird.

From your explanation it seems like it goes back to the black people are lazy and don't like to work racist mythology. Doesn't it? I mean I've never heard it, but it doesn't seem like that big of a mystery to me. Obviously Crawford HAD heard it before. Maybe it's popular in Boston. Don't let anyone ever tell you Boston isn't filled with plenty of morons and racists. My brother almost got killed there one day, and he's white. (cops) Even he always said if he was black he'd be dead. And he's nobody's idea of a crusader.

No, it goes to the old line:

"Why do you call them Mondays?"
"Because I fucking hate Mondays"

End.

So it's a way of stating that you hate black people, really? Where have you heard this, is it a MA thing? I'm surprised because it's not like racial slurs are unusual where I grew up.

Boston is as racist as it gets. There are decades of history of black athletes in Boston being discriminated against. Boston is a rough city all around.

I don't know if it's as racist as it gets, but there's a lot of racists there. It's a shame, it's a beautiful city. You have been there right?

Yeah, I lived there for nine months in 2008 and then have visited it other times. The City itself has amazing history I'm just not a fan of the people or the weather.

People put more effort into being offended than.... I can't find an answer.

Never heard of this before and it sounds like something a kid would come up with, "dang it, monday, taking me back to... having to get up?"

You might get away with it as an insult even if it's a stupid one. But how is it racist? Everyone hates mondays, that's not a black thing, it would be just an insult. It's like calling somebody an a**hole being racist, nobody wants to be an a**hole, but if you call a mexican that it's not racist, just insulting.

It's used primarily towards blacks, when it's used at all.

Growing up in Alabama, in the 60s, I thought I had heard all the racist words that exist.

This is a new one.

I don't see the racial connection though. It seems like anyone could be like a monday if you hate them.
